Nick Peet Obituary

Nick Peter Peet went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 22, 2017 in Conroe, Texas. He was born on December 11, 1917 in Houston, Texas to Greek immigrants Peter and Maria Peet. Nick met the girl of his dreams, Ruth Weber, at First Baptist Church of Baytown in 1941. They were married on March 28, 1942 and celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this past March. Nick graduated from Rice University in 1941 with a degree in chemical engineering "with distinction." While attending Rice University, Nick worked full time in the labor department of Humble Oil from 1936-1941 to support his mother and siblings while he was in college. After graduating from Rice, he transferred to the technical department at Humble Oil working as a chemical engineer. Nick then wanted to enter the military to serve in WWII, but when he went to the draft board he was told that he had been made 4F by Humble Oil because his service to the war effort would be better utilized as a chemical engineer. This was evidenced by the fact that Humble Oil produced 100% of the high octane aviation fuel used by the Allied forces in WWII. Nick was awarded 23 patents for his inventions relating to petroleum processes and the invention of two catalytic cracking units at the Baytown refinery. He served as the operator of these 2 units throughout the war. He was transferred to the Humble Building in downtown Houston when it opened in 1961. He retired in 1980 after 44 years of service with Humble Oil which became Exxon. Nick and Ruth welcomed 5 children into their home while in Baytown: Carol, John, James, Alan, and Karen. As a family, they enjoyed many years together active at First Baptist Church Baytown. During these years, Nick enjoyed teaching Sunday School, working on church committees, and serving as a deacon. His interests included working on cars and taking his family on vacations. Since moving to Conroe in 1983 to be closer to family, Nick and Ruth have enjoyed 35 years of active involvement at First Baptist Church Conroe where they formed many lasting friendships. In all, he taught Sunday School for 74 years. The family would like to extend a special word of thanks to Margie Carter for her loving care of Nick and Ruth over the last several years and for her friendship to the Peet family over the past 40 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, his children James and Karen, his brother John, and his sister Leah and her husband George Kostas. He is survived by his wife Ruth of 75 years, his sister-in law Kim of Highland Village, Texas, his children Carol and her husband Russ Dyer of Reno, Nevada, John and his wife Betty of Conroe, and Alan and his wife Sandi of Huntsville, Texas, 7 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Cashner Funeral Home (801 Teas Road, Conroe, TX, 77303). Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 10:00am in Cashner Colonial Chapel with Pastor Merle Blado, Pastor Cliff Herrington and Pastor Jeff Berger officiating. Entombment will follow in Garden Park Mausoleum. You are invited to view our webpage and leave written tributes to the family at cashnerconroe.com

Memories and Condolences
for Nick Peet

Not sure what to say?

June 30, 2017

I was so very sorry to hear about Uncle Nick's passing. I didn't find out until the day of the funeral or I would have been there. I know this is a sad time for the family, but he was blessed to live such a long and wonderful life with his family, friends and his church. I hope Aunt Ruth is doing well and please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Peet was an amazing man. Not only did he and Ruth raise the very best kids and grandkids but he also touched my life as a reliable and dedicated substitute at CHS. My students loved him and he always taught them life lessons right along with the lesson plans. He was a wonderful man. My heart goes out to the entire family. I wish I could have attended his service.
You have our deepest sympathies and many prayers,
Love, Ava and Alvin Spell

John and Betty,

So sorry to learn of your father's passing.

No matter how much it might have been anticipated, or how well prepared you think you are, the passing of a parent is always shocking and the grief profuond.

We will remember all of you in our prayers.
