Martha O'Neal Morris, a beloved resident of Dardanelle, formerly of Pottsville, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2023, at the tender age of 96.
She found peace at the Dardanelle Nursing Center in Dardanelle, AR, surrounded by the care and comfort she deserved. Martha was born on November 16, 1926, in the small town of Acworth, GA, to her loving parents, George and Beulah Brown Gunnin.
Martha's life was filled with accomplishments and love. She was a graduate of Martha Berry High School and Atlanta Law School, Class of 1950. As a dedicated teacher at Pottsville Elementary School, she inspired countless young minds with her passion for education. However, Martha's most cherished roles were those of a devoted wife, nurturing mother, doting grandmother, and proud great-grandmother.
Not only was Martha deeply involved in her family's lives, but she also actively contributed to her community. She was a valued member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Historical Society, always seeking to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage of her beloved town. Additionally, Martha was an integral part of the Pottsville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where she served as the cherished wife of the pastor.
In her leisure time, Martha found solace in the pages of books, the thrill of word search puzzles, and the exhilaration of cheering on the Arkansas Razorbacks. These simple pleasures brought her joy and comfort throughout the years.
Martha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas G. Morris Sr., her caring parents, her devoted son, Thomas G. Morris Jr., and her siblings: two brothers, Ray Gunnin and Raymond Gunnin, and a sister, Annie Jo Grizzard. While she may have departed this world, Martha's memory lives on through her surviving family.
Martha is survived by her loving daughter, Rebekah Roberts, and her husband Joe, residing in Magazine. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Joan Morris, residing in Fort Smith. Martha's legacy extends through her nine cherished grandchildren: Joslyn Giles and her husband Steve from Ozark, AL; Scarlett Franks from Fort Smith; Jericho McElroy and his wife Chelsea from Jacksonville, IL; Skyler McElroy and his wife Jascinda from Booneville; Michelle Phillips and her husband Brad from Fayetteville; Kristen Roslov and her husband Boris from South Lake, TX; Thomas G. Morris III from Rogers; Shannon Roberts and his wife, Cathy from Fort Smith; and Erika Rainwater and her husband Heath from Charleston. Her love and influence also reach 14 adored great-grandchildren along with some special friends, Garry and Hope Pennman.
A Funeral Service to honor Martha's life will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2023, at Humphrey Chapel. The service will be officiated by Bro. Steve Downum and Bro. Henry Jenkins, who will guide the gathering with words of comfort and reflection. Following the ceremony, Martha will be laid to rest at Pisgah Cemetery in Pottsville by Humphrey Funeral Service, where she will find eternal peace.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Pottsville School Endowment or the Pope County Historical Society, 15 2nd Street, Pottsville, AR 72858.
