John Broome Obituary

John L. "Jack" Broome

Tansboro, NJ - John L. "Jack" Broome, age 82, a lifelong resident of Tansboro, went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with lung disease. Beloved husband of Doris E. Broome (nee Heggan), loving father of Doris E. Ruggeri (Anthony D.), proud Pop Pop of Anthony T. Ruggeri (Meghan) and Christopher J. Ruggeri. He is also survived by loving nieces and nephews.

Jack lived his life showing and giving compassion for others. He began attending Tansboro Trinity United Methodist Church at a very young age, and gradually became involved in most activities of the church. He loved choir, enjoyed Bible study, and helped the Pastor whenever needed.

In 1955, Jack proudly joined the United States Army and drove a tank while stationed in Germany. While there, the Tansboro Volunteer Fire Company was formed by the townspeople, including Jack's father and two brothers. Shortly thereafter, Jack joined, becoming a devoted firefighter. He drove the fire truck for over 60 years. In later years, Jack joined the Firemen's Relief Association and became Vice President.

About 33 years ago, Jack decided to join the American Legion Post 311 to help our veterans and their families. He also became a Camden County Legion member and Finance Officer.

Another of Jack's accomplishments was his 32-year career with New Jersey Transit. He retired as a Director of Transportation for the Southern Division in 1998. He loved his job and kept in touch with fellow employees over the years.

At one point, he became in charge of the New Freedom Cemetery, where he will be buried.

A viewing will be held on Monday, May 21, 2018 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and again on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Leroy P. Wooster Funeral Home and Crematory, 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, NJ. Jack's funeral service will begin at 11:00 at the funeral home, Pastor Wesley Hawk officiating. Interment will follow at New Freedom Cemetery, Tansboro, NJ. I am a neighbor of the Church that Jack belonged to.
For over 30 years I enjoyed our frequents chats after church service or some function Jack was there helping out with thruout the year. Though we never did anything social together I still consider Jack a good friend of mine. When I first moved in 32 years ago and needed help Jack and Ralph Bringhurst were the 1st ones to help me out out with water as my well went dry. When my son was serving in Iraq war in the Marine Corp Jack came over with a flag with a star on it, it said hang this in your window to let others know your son is serving our country. He even knew my dogs name! Like I said we had many little conversations over the years and I will miss him dearly. My prayers go out to his wife Doris and there daughter Doris.
