Michael D'Alessandro Obituary
Stratford - Michael Anthony D'Alessandro ("The Old Colls"), 90, of Stratford on December 18, 2018. Beloved husband of sixty years to Margaret "Peggy" (née O'Leary), devoted father of Andrew John, Thomas Michael (JoyceAnna), and Richard Peter (Sandy) D'Alessandro, and proud grandfather of Luke, Maximus, Thomas, and Anthony D'Alessandro, he was born on June 30, 1928, one of five children of Michael Anthony and Teresa (née Totarella) D'Alessandro. Mr. D'Alessandro is predeceased by his three elder sisters and survived by his fraternal twin John T. D'Alessandro with whom he served honorably in the USAF. Raised in Collingswood, a star athlete as two-way tackle on two successive champion CHS football teams, he became a famously winning coach particularly of CHS tennis. Attaining his master's degree, he spent his long career as a well-loved and fondly-remembered teacher in Collingswood schools. A USPTA teaching pro, he brought his charismatic classroom style onto the tennis court, imbuing young and old with his passion for the game through lessons. A faithful son of the Holy Catholic Church, Mr. D'Alessandro contributed to the construction of Saint Luke Church in Stratford where, as an original member of the parish, he was among the first in the Diocese of Camden to serve as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a viewing on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, St. Luke campus at Vassar and Warwick Rds, Stratford, 10:00 am until 12:00pm, Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 pm. Interment at 1:30 PM at New St. Mary's Cemetery at 515 W. Browning Rd, Bellmawr NJ 08031. Condolences may be offered at www.dankshinskifuneralhome.com

To the family of coach D Alessandro it was with great sorrow that I learned of coaches passing. As a young man growing up in Colls he was all I wanted to be. A teacher coach and later a mentor and we always kept in touch. I have a saying that because he was I am! Farewell Tom Hanson , Camden Football coach retired .

To the D'Alessandro Family: Mr. D'Alessandro was a favorite teacher of mine. I, too, remember the scores posted on the board every Friday during football season and his Charlton Heston story! What a nice, even-tempered teacher. With sympathy, Donna (McGovern) Lesher. Collingswood Class of '75.

Mr. Michael D'Alessandro, What a wonderful person. I was so luck to have our paths cross at a young age for myself and a giving age for him. I was part of the 1963, 64 and 65 Colls football team. His words of wisdom didn't make much sense then but they planted the seed. As I moved through my life and his comments echoed in my head I believe I turned out as a much better human being.

A fond memory of our Collingswood Junior High Freshmen football coach ('70-'71); is of the Friday's in history class the day before the "big" Varsity game on Saturday. Mr. D'Alessandro would have the blackboard of his history class covered with the history of the past scores of the games played against the weekend's rival. I and another teammate( Jim K) would sneak up during lunch ( Mr. D was our proctor); and change the scores around. We had history class with him right after lunch period; and, he knew of course who made the changes, but we all got a laugh. It was 10 years or so later, when by accident I saw him at the Stratford post office, and we reminisced about those days and Freshmen football. He is someone I will always remember. God bless the coach and his family.
