Evelyn J. Boyd, age 86, of Stratford, peacefully entered into eternal rest on August 10, 2023, after a brief stay at Bridgeport Hospital. She was the devoted wife to the late Leonard Boyd.
Evelyn was born in Derby, Connecticut, on September 22, 1936. She was the only daughter of the late Paul and Anna (Samojedny) Benco. Evelyn was a devout catholic who grew up at St. Michael's School prior to attending St. Vincent's Nursing School in Bridgeport and becoming a Registered Nurse. She spent many years as a nurse at Laurel Heights in Shelton and worked her way up to Charge Nurse until they closed. She then transitioned to Ella Grasso Center until her retirement. Evelyn was very proud to be a nurse. She was easy to like and quickly endeared herself to her patients. She was known by her coworkers to be empathetic, helpful, professional and dependable, many of whom she had lifelong friendships with. Evelyn was a member of the Eastern Star and Amaranth, as well as a devoted dog mom to her German Shepherds and Skipper. Among other things, she loved to travel and had cruised to some beautiful, tropical locations, as well as Alaska. One of her last big trips was Poland, Budapest and Eastern Europe - which brought her back to her family roots and was an experience she cherished. She will be dearly missed.
Evelyn is survived by her sister-in-law, Jean Benco; nieces, Debbie Benco and Donna (Benco) Chervenak and her husband John; proud great-aunt of Bobby Benco (fiancé Lauren Raucci), Carly Chervenak, Tommy Garcia, Mikey Chervenak, Jessica Clemmenson (husband Donnie), and Alex Chervenak; as well as her three lifelong friends, Elizabeth Quarters, Susan Castagna and Rose Syarto. She was predeceased by her two brothers, John Benco and Robert Benco.
Friends are invited to greet the family on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth Street, Derby. Her funeral procession will leave at 10:30 a.m. for her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Church, 75 Derby Avenue, Derby. Burial will follow at Mount Saint Peter Cemetery.
