Richard Monahan Obituary

MONAHAN Reverend Richard J. Monahan, age 81 of Milford, passed away on September 9, 2010. Reverend Monahan was born on August 13, 1929 in Philadelphia to the late Joseph and Agnes Monahan. He attended Catholic elementary schools in Philadelphia and Northeast Catholic High School, from which he graduated first in his class of six hundred students. He attended the University of Niagara in New York, and received his priestly formation at Saint Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1959 at St. Augustine Cathedral, Bridgeport by then-Bishop Lawrence J. Shehan. His first assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Augustine Cathedral, Bridgeport. He also served as Parochial Vicar at Assumption Parish, Westport, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Fairfield, St. Mary Parish, Bethel, and St. Theresa Parish, Trumbull. In 1976, he was appointed Pastor of Saint Catherine of Siena Parish in Trumbull, where he served until his retirement in 1991. He is survived by several cousins including, Rudy and Dorothy Fields, Paul and Grace Monahan, Kathleen Monahan, Kate Monahan, Margaret and Ray Eckert, and Mary and Kenneth Eichmann and many dear friends at St. Catherine of Siena Parish and dear friends, Don, Maria and DonArmando Chao. On Tuesday, September 14, Reverend Monahan's body will be received at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 200 Shelton Rd., Trumbull, CT 06611 at 5 p.m. where it will lie in state until 7 p.m., when a Vigil Mass of Christ the High Priest will be celebrated by Msgr. Richard J. Shea. On Wednesday, September 15 at 10 a.m. the Most Reverend William E. Lori, Bishop of Bridgeport, will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Arrangements in care of the Cyril F. Mullins Trumbull Funeral Home 399 White Plains Rd.
