Dr. Charles Kahn GULF BREEZE - Dr. Charles Kahn, 79, died Monday, March 13, 2006. Friends are invited to a minyan of comfort led by Rabbi Jack Romberg on Wednesday at the home of Judge Charles and Janet Kahn. Waters and Hibbert Funeral Home in Pensacola (850-432-6534) is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jonathan L. Kahn Library Fund, Temple Beth-El, 800 N. Palafox St., Pensacola, FL 32501. Born March 27, 1926, Dr. Kahn was a fourth-generation resident of the Pensacola area and had practiced medicine for 46 years. He graduated from Tulane University with a Bachelor of Science in 1946 and received his Doctor of Medicine from Tulane University in 1950. He interned at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and was a resident at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas and Duval Medical Center in Jacksonville. He served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 and as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1950 to 1953. Dr. Kahn's medical appointments include chief of the Department of Medicine Service, Pensacola Education Program, where he was also a vice chairman and chairman; chief of the Department of Medicine, University Hospital; chairman of Florida Community Hospital Education Counsel; president of the medical staff, University Hospital; and president of medical staff, Baptist Hospital. He also held varying positions in several professional organizations, including president of the Escambia County Medical Society; delegate and speaker of the Florida Medical Association; president of the Florida Society of Internal Medicine; speaker of the American Society of Internal Medicine; president of the Northwest Florida Heart Association; president of the West Florida Academy of Internal Medicine; founder, director and president of Florida Physicians Association; founder and president of the Florida Physicians Legal Defense Co.; and chairman of the Florida Delegation of the American Medical Association. He was honored with a certificate of merit by the Florida Medical Association; named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International; given the Charles K. Donegan Internist Award by the Florida Society of Internal Medicine; and was named Distinguished Internist of the Year by the American Society of Internal Medicine. He was active in civic and community organizations. He was president of the Audubon Society (F.M. Weston Chapter) an Eagle Scout and Scout master in Boy Scouts of America; a board member and president of the Pensacola Federated Jewish Charities; a board member and president of Temple Beth-El; a board member of United Way; and on the Incorporation Committee for the city of Gulf Breeze and the Santa Rosa County Beach Administration Board. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bettie Kahn; a son, Judge Charles Kahn (and Janet) of Tallahassee; a daughter, Bettie Kahn of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Harry Kahn (and Anita); a sister-in-law, Rose Rubin (and Richard) of Memphis, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Julia A. Kahn and Sally J. Kahn. He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan L. Kahn.
