Samuel Baker Obituary

Samuel Hirsch Baker N. CHARLESTON - Samuel Hirsch Baker, 68, of North Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Barbara St. Cyr Baker, entered into eternal rest Monday, February 3, 2025. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 15, 2025 in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends Saturday at the Northwoods Chapel from 12:00 pm until the time of service. Samuel was born July 5, 1956 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Harris Joseph Baker and Irene Hirsch Baker. Sammie grew up working in his father's grocery store, learning the trade and idealizing him. After his father's passing, Sammie took over the family business and helped his mother find her footing. He devoted his life to taking care of his parents. Sammie had a love and fascination with cars, reading magazines and talking to people about cars. Growing up, he used to see cars on the road and could name every make and model. Sammie is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara; siblings: Joshua Isaac Baker (Paula) and Jennifer Leah Baker Monroe both of N. Charleston, SC; nieces: Lindsey Grace Baker of N. Charleston, SC, Michelle St. Cyr of Elloree, SC, Danielle Lucas (Brandon) of Posquason, VA, Christina Carroll of Summerville, SC, Jamie Finnegan and Drew Finnegan (Stephanie) both of Mt. Pleasant, SC, sisters-in-law: Jo Ann Altman (Harry) and Brenda St. Cyr both of Charleston, SC; brother-in-law, Henry Frank St. Cyr of Walterboro, SC; and many loved great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his niece, Haley Jordan Baker. Memorials may be made to the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, N. Charleston, SC 29406. I am so sorry that we did not keep in close contact with our family in Charleston as we should have. I am surprised to see Sammy was interested in cars and pets. Those are two things we had in common. I think we would have gotten along very well with such common interests. I know he will be missed by so many family and friends. Our deepest condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear about my childhood friend Sammie. I remember early days waiting for an SCE&G bus with Sammie and his Mom to go downtown, spending nights at the house, visiting the store and seeing Mr. Baker behind the counter with Sammie. Later on, hanging out at Middleton High, hanging out on his Yamaha 100 cc motorcycle, and after that, his 1st car, a lt. yellow Ford Galaxy 500 in the lot and later a Plymouth Duster, and a red Volare. I remember living on James Island and He tells Me about this girl He met while working on his beer route that He was interested in named Barabara...my deepest condolences to his family

Sammie Baker left a void in the lives of all of us who knew and loved him. His big smile and genuine words of welcome had a disarming effect on those he encountered. He always thought of others and showed it by words and thoughtful ways. We could always count on him to keep us informed. I am not sure if he ever met a stranger because he had a way of putting you at ease quickly with his conversational tone. I am sure he will be looking down from heaven watching over Barbara and all of us in the family. You are going to be missed greatly my friend. Rest peacefully and know we love you.

Sammie is my big brother, and I am devastated with his loss. He took care of parents for both his side and wife Barbara's. At the age of 19 when our father passed, he helped Mother liquidate a business and helped Mother figure out the bills and all of the business end of life -- all the while being crushed that we had lost Daddy -- who Sammie Idolized. He was a wonderful teacher and cared more for his loved ones than himself. He was a guiding light for me as his little brother. I love him dearly and I can't see how we move on without him. He and Barbara dedicated their lives to helping other people. I can't help but feel cheated that Sammie was not given the chance to enjoy his life and life out the rest of it in peace and love. He was a one of a kind; I'll miss him for the rest of my life and he'll be in my heart and mind forever and ever. In the meantime, Sammie's wife, Barbara is left to pick up the pieces. We will lift her and make sure that Sammie is proud of how we are and will continue to support her. Barbara is a sister to me. We love her because of who she is and because she made her life surround Sammie's with love, affection, loyalty and care.

So sorry about the passing of Sammie. He was a dear friend and neighbor for pver 20 years before I moved. Loved him and Barbara coming over usually on Saturdays and had our talks mostly about politics and current events. He and Barbara were always helping me in one way or another. I treasured both of them. Sammie was really great explaining things and giving me advice when needed. I will miss him much but I know that now he is at peace. Keep in mind, Barbara, that Sammie was special in many lives in one way or another. And never forget, "God only plucks those out of this world he can no longer love at a distance. In one split second, he chose Sammie." Love, Maggie
