James Suggs Obituary

September 13, 1947 - May 5, 2023 Jimmy was born to Maxine and Ralph Suggs in Ventura, California where his family had relocated from Arkansas and Ralph and his father worked in the coal mines. They moved to Port Hueneme because they heard that there were jobs on the waterfront. They both were founding members of Port Hueneme, Local 46. Jimmy and his family moved to Wilmington, when he was about seven years old after his grandfather retired from ILWU. Ralph became a member of Local 13 until his retirement. Jimmy became a member of Local 46 in 1967 and retired from Local 94 in 2009. In 1965 Jimmy met his soon to be wife, Gloria Lopez, at a dance sponsored by The Escorts Club, which was part of the Mahar House of Wilmington and the Lovells club from San Pedro. Gloria and Jimmy traveled together to many places, but always came back to their home in Carson. Jimmy loved Wilmington and he called his home in Carson as being on the north side of Wilmington. Jimmy started coaching baseball with his brother-in-law George De La Torre at Scott Park in Carson and that became the start of his coaching career of over 35 years in baseball and football. He coached many youths from the surrounding areas and made so many lasting friendships with the players and their families, friendships that have lasted to this day. Jimmy is survived by his loving wife Gloria, his son Brian and his wife Gina; and son Jamie and his wife Michelle. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Victoria and her husband Andrew Alvarez, grandson Christopher Suggs, Serena Suggs and Sasha Suggs and great granddaughter Eva and his beloved dog Willie. He is also survived by his sister Brenda Moore, husband Jimmy; his nephew Anthony Moore, his wife Susie and his daughter Maggie; his niece Lachelle Birdwell, husband Jason and her children Parker and Gavin. Jimmy will always be in the hearts of his family. Services and interment will be May 24, 2023 at All Souls Cemetery at 11:00 am. All Souls Cemetary 4400 Cherry Ave. Long Beach, CA 90807

Dear Gloria and Suggs families, Celebrating your fabulous 50th Anniversary with you was amazing. Your love for each other was probably greater this day than on your wedding day. You both radiated the joy of these many years, together. Each photo you shared of Jimmy continued to show how happy his life was with all of you. My sincere condolences, prayers and heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you. Gloria´s laugh and beautiful smile were always a sign of her love for Jimmy and her sons. God Bless all of you. Love, Barbara Alexander

Jimmy was an amazing and stern coach . He was a coach and a father role model . I can still hear him say "run it again!" Black 32 dive! He will never be forgotten and now he is on the best team ever. Love you coach. We will see each other again. Rest well.
