Kathleen Mary Newcomb Scrimgeour

1944 - 2016

Kathleen Mary Newcomb Scrimgeour, a long-time resident of Boulder, died on January 28 at her home on Hawthorn Avenue. She was born on April 24, 1944, in Nyack, New York, to Ernest Newcomb and Emily Brophy Newcomb, who both preceded her in death. She grew up in Kanona, N.Y., Weedsport, N.Y., and Fort Lyon, Colorado. She received a B.A. in education from Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado, and a Master's degree in counseling from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is survived by three children: Kyle (Alison) Scrimgeour of Huntington Beach, CA; Meghan (Jason) Hegberg of Glenwood Springs, CO; and Reid (Haley) Scrimgeour of Longmont, CO; six granddaughters - Haylie, Audrey, Brenna, Avery, Skya, and Lyra; sister Eileen of Durrus, Ireland; brother Marty of Westcliffe, CO; sister Sharon of Fort Collins, CO; sister Margaret of Honolulu, HI; brother Ernie of Rochester, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. For most of her career, Kathleen was a counselor at Angevine Middle School in Lafayette, CO, where she believed her most important function was as an advocate for the students she counseled. She retired in 2006. Among her many, many interests, Kathleen loved traveling, writing, golf, genealogy, movies, entertaining, history, gardening, storytelling, road trips, tennis, cooking, photography, and dancing (tap dancing and Irish ceile" dancing especially). She spent many summers in Ireland, where she lived for a year. She owned three acres of land in West Cork near the Atlantic Ocean, where she had many friends. She will be remembered for her welcoming smile and irresistible laugh, her unconditional love of family and friends, her kindness, her all-encompassing generosity, and her boundless enthusiasm for life. A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at the Hotel Boulderado, 2115 13th Street in Boulder, on April 30 from 1pm to 5pm.
