John Gillen Obituary

John Edward Gillen OLD HURLEY-John Edward Gillen, 87, of Hurley, died at his home Friday, March 10, 2012. Born June 14, 1924 in Kingston he is the son of the late John B. and Hazel Sheeley Gillen. Mr. Gillen proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He served aboard The Destroyer Escort #35 in The Pacific Theatre of operations. He is the recipient of the American Theatre Medal, Victory Medal, and Asiatic Pacific Medal with two stars. Employed as a Quality control inspector for I B M for thirty three years, he retired in 1986. A charter member of John Jordan Post 5086 VFW Hurley, IBM Quarter century club, and the Hurley seniors. John spent winter months in Gulf Shores Alabama, an avid Golfer, and reader of History, he traveled the world over, traveling from Alaska, to Australia. The family will miss the 6 a.m. phone call message containing the days letters for the answer to the Jumble. His wife Elizabeth Scharp Gillen died Oct. 4 1970, a sister Dolores Houser, and brother Philip Gillen also predeceased him. Surviving are his wife of twenty seven years Joan B Gillen. His children, Michelle Murphy and her husband Brian of Stone Ridge, Kathy McLaren and her husband Jim, of Bloomington, John Gillen and his wife Sherrie of Springfield, Missouri, Jeffrey, and David Gillen of Kingston, Linda Eldridge, and her husband David of Cape Cod, Mass. Rolf Reiss and his wife M.J. of Phoenicia. Sister; Audrey Frost of Hurley, sister-in-law Joan Snyder of Hurley, grandchildren; Matthew, Joseph, Adrienne, Devin, Austin, Lizzie, Katie, Travis. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc., 27 Smith Avenue Kingston, New York . Friends will be received at the funeral home Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. John Jordan Post 5086 VFW will conduct a ritual Sunday at 7:15 p.m. Services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Charles Stickley will officiate. Burial with military honors Hurley cemetery.
