Maureen Murgia Obituary

Maureen (Mahon) Murgia, 81, a lifelong Albany resident, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, NJ, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Flushing, Queens, she was the daughter of the late Joseph T. Sr. and Betty (Riley) Mahon. She was the beloved wife of her late husband Albert R. Murgia, the loving mother of Gregory J. Murgia (Lynn) of Eatontown, NJ and Maura J. Murgia (Darby Vedder) of Niskayuna, and the cherished Mimi to her granddaughters Nicole and Melissa Murgia. She was predeceased by her dear brother Joseph T. (Bud) Mahon, Jr. (and sister-in-law Linda Mahon) and a dear aunt to Joseph T. (Maria) Mahon III, Lisa (Joseph) Lynch, Laura (Michael) Garand, Kimberly (Todd) Henzel and Michelle Mahon (David Sowinski), with whom she shared so many memories poolside at 276 South Manning and at countless family celebrations. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Martha Murgia (late Henry), brother-in-law Edward Murgia, and many dear nieces and nephews from her late husband Albert's family. Maureen graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names and attended the College of Saint Rose. She spent many years as a real estate broker, but her true calling was as owner of the Wine Cellar at Stuyvesant Plaza for more than 20 years, where she was truly in her element interacting with her staff and patrons on a daily basis. She was the epitome of a "people person" and had a natural talent for getting to know someone on a personal level and putting a smile on their face within minutes. Her interest in others was genuine and her ability to connect with people was truly amazing, as evidenced by the many relationships and friendships she forged over the years. Above all, her love of family will be her true legacy. In addition to her devotion to her family, she truly enjoyed life with her fun-loving and adventurous spirit. Whether it was traveling to Europe or the islands, her boating adventures at Sacandaga Lake, her weekly dinner outings with friends (usually the Barnsider after Saturday mass), or at any family gathering, you would usually find her enjoying a glass of pinot grigio while chatting away with anyone who came across her path. Her sense of humor, charm, and smile will be dearly missed. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Maureen's family Tuesday, March 16, 2021 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany, NY 12206. Greg, sorry for your loss. I remember your Mom well from STA and Lippman's Pharmacy. And I think she was friendly with my sister who was at AHN at about the same time. Sympathy to you and your family.

Dear Greg and Maura, Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers at this diff time. Words cannot express how much my heart aches knowing that your mom is no longer with us. She literally has been a part of my life since the 4th grade at AHN. We were always together as kids sharing everything wven grandparents and cousins and always tagged along on my older sister and later brother in law´s swim and drve in dates! We grew up together and truly were mire like sisters than friends. We even worked at the same bank. Despite the miles and passage of tome we always stayed in touch. I loved your Mom and grieve because I loved her so much. I cherish the wonderful memories I have been blessed with and expect to see you Mom´s beautiful irish eyes peeking down through the stars at night. I trust she is at peace. I also have a funny feeling she has been appointed to direct the social affairs of heaven. Heaven may not be as quiet as it once was, but she will ensure everyone is happy.

Having spent many happy hours with our mothers and children at the pool on Manning Blvd., I have known Maureen forever; well, actually since our early days at Holy Names. We kept in touch at Christmas until recently, and our mothers were partners in crime. Her cheerful spirit and beautiful smile will be remembered by all. I sympathize with her family at her loss.

What a delight to be around. Always ready with a friendly hello and a beautiful smile. Of course a little visit over a glass of wine at Stuyvesant Plaza was always nice although we didn´t do it often enough. RIP Maureen.

I worked in "Charmant" a women´s clothing store that use to be in Stuyvansant. Your mom shopped there and we shopped in her store! Loved her, we always had great conversations.
