HELEN WITHROW Obituary

Helen Withrow Helen Withrow, 89, passed away July 10, 2012, at her home. She was the youngest of three daughters, born to Amasa and Birgit Bull. Helen grew up in Glencoe, went to New Trier, and graduated from Northwestern. She married Richard "Dick" Withrow in 1947, and moved to Barrington in 1952, raising three sons there. Helen and Dick's loving marriage of 59 years was a source of strength for the family and an inspiration for all who knew them. A love of the outdoors, especially sailing, was a constant theme in the family's life. Friends of all ages have joyous memories of time on the water with Helen and Dick. Helen, a longtime resident of Barrington, believed in giving back to the community. She was on the Barrington Plan Commission and the Board of the Stillman Nature Center. She was a member of Garden Club, Citizens for Conservation, and a supporter of the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois. Helen will be remembered for her vibrant love of life, sense of humor, and generous spirit. Vero Beach, Fla. was her winter home and the source of wonderful new friends later in her life. She shared her love of the arts and music, especially opera, with her Vero condo friends. Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dick; and sons, Rick and David. She is survived by her son, John; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Community Church of Barrington, 407 S. Grove Ave., Barrington. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Helen's name may be made to the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, Stillman Nature Center, or Community Church of Barrington.
