I am so saddened to have learned of Mr. Amdur's sudden passing. I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Amdur for many many years when he came to visit our office for his dental check-ups. As I cleaned his teeth we had many wonderful chats. I came to know him as a very caring family man and a pillar in his community. He loved bragging about those grandchildren he loved so much. My heartfelt condolences to all of his family.

I extend my heart-felt condolences to the Amdur family during this time of loss. I was saddened to encounter Steven Amdur's obituary and recall him with much fondness. I first met Steven and Barbara Amdur in the early 1980's when they hired me, a high-school student, as their weekend receptionist at Amdur Realty on Dempster in Morton Grove. I followed the company to Highland Park; first to the basement office of the then-Bell Federal building, and ultimately to their offices in Port Clinton Square. Steven Amdur was a visionary man and the development of Port Clinton Square along with the downtown redevelopment of Highland Park was a dream he brought to fruition. Over the years, I came to know Steven and Barbara and their two children and was always touched by their kindness and professionalism. Mr. Amdur, as I referred to him, was kind and paternalistic and Mrs. Amdur was an exemplary role model to me as a young woman: intelligent, kind and ever elegant. Though I had moved to California for nearly ten years and lost contact with the Amdurs, two years ago I relocated to Chicago and currently live in neighboring Lake Forest. I so enjoy going with my husband and children to Port Clinton Square on a summer evening to enjoy the fountain, music or even some ice cream. At each visit to Port Clinton Square, I am reminded of Steven Amdur and his visionary legacy which remains today for many to enjoy. I am proud to have known such a remarkable man. May his memory be eternal and may God grant his family comfort during this time of loss.

I Remember Steve

I felt a little different than the others attending the beautiful service on Tuesday. You see, I only saw Steve Amdur about six times in my life. But the quantity of time spent with a person is not a meaningful measure – certainly not compared to the value of that time.

Besides running into Barbara and Steve at Ravinia on a couple of occasions – thus affirming his love for music – the context of our relationship was the annual Evanston Fountain Square Art Festival , organized by his daughter Amy and The Evanston Chamber of Commerce. Since 2000, during the last weekend in June, Steve and I have toiled in the channels of artist hospitality, registration, traffic control, and patron management.

Amid the bustle of running errands, finding lost parents and children, solving the inevitable fires, and placating concerned artists, we developed a friendship as “employees” of his daughter Amy. Together we took direction, orders, criticism (usually constructive), and composed witty responses.

Most memorable, however, was that while carrying out the details of those intense weekends, and bound by a common goal of shaping and presenting a successful art festival, Steve and I would discuss the “big picture” issues of urban development.

We both shared a love for public affairs and planning. How should pedestrian traffic flow? What should be the right mix of stores? Architecture: preservation vs. the new and modern. Zoning policy, transportation policy, municipal governance, and the role of business organizations. Those were all matters that Steve cared about. His travels and fertile mind helped give him sound perspectives.

I think Steve was passionate about cities and making them work because he thought of downtowns as the agoras of society. Places where people from all walks of life – the same people he loved to meet – could come and share the stories he love to hear, craft the quips he love to tell, and expound upon the important subjects of the day.

Occasionally, Steve would call me at work and ask for my counsel on some civic issue he was grappling with in Highland Park. Those conversations usually digressed to many other public policies that were impacting downtowns in the Chicago area and around the nation. He always wanted to know what was going on in other cities so he could take the best practices and try to apply them to the community he was involved with.

Steve was one of those people who communicated his affection for you. Whether it was his powerful arm around your shoulder in a half-hug, or an ebullient compliment, Steve let you know his respect for you. He was mensch supreme. I wish I could have offered more of that affection back to Steve.

We may not have spent much actual time together but that doesn’t matter now. Steve lived every day to its fullest, and so those precious minutes we did have will stay engrained in my heart forever.
