To Miss Payne's family I send heartfelt condolences. She told me once that I was the most "something" person she had ever met, and I agree with her. Her teaching skills were superior and her friendship true. Jim and I would like to say thank you and ROLL TIDE!! With respect and love, Debbie Livingston McGhee

I was a student of Ms. Payne and thought of her as one of my favorite teachers at Comer. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

I was so saddened to read about our loss of Ms. Payne. I never had her as a teacher, but I feel honored to have been able to call her friend. Ms. Mims, you are in my prayers.

Although I haven't seen or heard from Ms Payne in several years, I was sad to hear of her passing. I, too, was one who thought of her as one of my favorite teachers. I took classes from her for two years and was on the yearbook staff for two years, so I was able to experience her in and outside the classroom. Some of those senior guys on annual staff used to make her crazy, teasing her, but I think she loved it. She really was a part of B. B. Comer School, the real HEART of it. I have thought of her so often.
Mary, my thoughts and prayers will be with you and the rest of the family during this difficult time. May God bless you.

It's truly difficult to describe being a student of Edwina Payne. She was a pleasant gift from God to all of us highschool students. Just when I thought I couldn't read and dissect another Shakespear play, she would say something really humorous and make it all interesting again. All my 4 sibs and I had her as a teacher and we still talk about her and how wonderful she was. Edwina Payne never changed form year to year. I'm very blessed that she had a part in my life and will always be in my memories.

I must add my name to the huge list of those who hold Miss Payne as favorite teacher, great inspiration, and dear friend. She was largely responsible for my becoming a teacher myself,as well as for my being a life long learner.I pray that God will hold Mary and the rest of her family close at this time.

Ms Payne was a very special lady and teaching was truly her calling. She was a true icon at BB COMER. So sorry to hear of her passing but know she is walking those streets of gold and metting with friends and family there. My thoughts are with her family and friends.

What a wonderful person Miss Payne was. We don't remember all the teachers we had, but she certainly stands out. She had the ability to listen and encourage. Each student felt special because of her. We will never know how many students were influenced by her but there were many. We will never forget her. God bless her family and friends.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of Miss Payne. I was a student of hers for three classes and have many fond memories of her. She truly cared for her students. All though, I took two years of French, I wasn't able to converse much when I visited France. I told her that it was because they did not speak French over there with a southern accent. She got a kick out of that. I pray God's blessings on Mary and the family.

Miss. Payne was a outstanding teacher as well as mentor. I developed a love for literature in her class and went on to receive my BS in English. Even though I never taught, I will always remember Ms. Payne for her love of literature and her love for teaching. She was one of my favorite teachers of my high school, college and graduate student days. May God bless the family.

I have always believed that Edwina Payne opened up a world of new horizons for me the minute she walked into my classroom at B. B. Comer. She was a true mentor and friend. She patiently allowed me to invent imaginary characters to accompany that strange family from Carcassonne that ambled around France in our daily translations in French class. She inspired us all to move beyond the walls of that classroom and find a richness in the world we would encounter. She was, in every respect, a great lady and exemplified the best of what typifies a master teacher. I am saddened that she is gone from us, but I have the joy of many, many wonderful memories. Good bye, Miss Percy!

Edwina Payne will always be remembered as a great teacher, mentor, friend. I remember when she came to Comer, just out of college. She had to establish her credibility early on. She was strict when she need to be and a friend when you needed one. She taught Allan & myself and well as both of our children. We all loved her dearly. Goodby good friend.

The BEST teacher ever! She found the good in all her students, some she had to dig deep. Thanks Ms. Payne for having a good shovel! Rest in peace.

Dear Mary and Family,
LC and I were so saddened to hear about the loss of Miss Payne. She will always have a special place in the hearts of her former students. She was a great teacher and encourager for so many of us who needed it. She loved us and wasn't afraid to let us be ourselves (especially in drama class). She helped me see the beauty in a "Grecian Urn" and to appreciate good literature. She will be remembered as "my favorite teacher" by thousands. We will be praying for you in the days ahead.
