Alfred Hauser Obituary

Alfred Warren Page Hauser, 95, another member of the "Greatest Generation", passed away on May 3, 2021. He was born in Newport News, Virginia on January 20, 1926 and lived there most of his life. He was the son of the late Alfred Jacob Hauser, Jr. and Myrtha Mozelle Long Hauser.

When Alfred was in his second year at Newport News High School, the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred on December 7, 1941. Many young men at that time were eager to join some branch of the military and Al was no exception. After graduation from Newport News High School in 1943, he worked in the shipyard for a year before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. On January 21, 1944, the day after his eighteenth birthday, Al received notice to report to Langley Field.

During WWII, he completed 35 missions over the Japanese Homeland of Honshu as a right blister gunner in a B-29 Superfortress. For his service he was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters and the rank of Staff Sergeant.

After his military service, he attended Virginia Tech and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Agriculture class of 1949. He later earned a diploma from Bowman Technical School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in watchmaking and jewelry repair in 1951. The Horological Institute of America awarded him the Certified Master Watchmaker's Certificate after completing the technical and written examinations. After working with his father and uncle in their watchmaking shop on Washington Avenue in Newport News he opened Hauser's Jewelry in Hilton Village in 1957. He later expanded his business to Hidenwood Shopping Center in 1968 and retired in 1984 to pursue his various interests and to care for his aging parents.

As a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church, Al enjoyed working in all phases of the organizing and the building of Grace Church. He was a supportive member before moving to West Point in 2007. At that time, he became a faithful member of Jerusalem Christian Church where he sang in the choir for many years.

Al was always known for his sense of humor and gift of gab. He had a deep belief in Faith, Freedom, Family and Friends. He loved music (especially country music) and did his share of singing and playing his guitar, which was a favorite hobby. He also loved the outdoors and had a passion for gardening and planted a variety of vegetables every season. In his last years, what he enjoyed most was riding his ATV through the woods on his "tree farm" in King William County.

He is survived by wife, Janis Ford Hauser; son, Lee Warren Hauser and his wife, Vicki Miles Hauser of Williamsburg; daughter, Janet Page Hauser and her husband, Gary Lynn Hayden of Lanexa, Virginia; daughter, Amy Page Hauser of Hudgins, Virginia; stepdaughter, Kirstin Steele and her husband, Andy of Charleston, South Carolina; stepdaughter, Carolyn Cullen and her husband, George of Ruckersville, Virginia; grandchildren, Amy Hart of Williamsburg, Matthew Hauser of Charlotte, North Carolina, Lindsay Schwarz of Austin, Texas, Brandon Slazyk of Richmond, and Ashley Petet of Chesterfield; and ten great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Battlefield Trust, Peninsula Rescue Mission or to your favorite charity. Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

Janis, Lee, Janet, Amy and family, deepest sympathy to the Hauser family. Grady and I have known your dad and all of you for many, many years. Grady love talking to Alfred from time to time catching up on all the latest family news. Alfred talked to me for a long time after Grady’s passing in December. My condolences to the family. My father and Alfred's father ("Jake") and Paige (sp) were childhood friends in the early 1900's. I remember "Jake" and Myrtha and Alfred very well. I still have the watch (a Longines) that was my high school graduation present purchased from Alfred and yes, it still runs and keeps good time..

Al, a true southern Christian gentleman, lived and loved an adventurous life! He was articulate, well educated, and shared his enthusiasm in a positive, caring manner to all those he encountered. Our hearts are heavy at his passing but we, as well as all those whose lives he touched, are truly blessed to have known Al. What a blessing to have shared in some of Al’s adventures and to have witnessed his upbeat and humble life. Rest In Peace Al - and may God sustain and lift up all your family and friends who grieve at your passing.
