Claude MILAM Obituary

MIDLOTHIAN - Claude White Milam, 87, died on June 18, 2011, at Brandermill Woods Nursing Home. He was born July 21, 1923, to devoted parents Lon and Gladys Milam in Big Island, Va.
At the age of 17, Claude joined the United States Navy serving his country proudly. Deployed to Hawaii and the surrounding Pacific Regions from 1942-44, Milam was wounded in action. Upon returning home he received a medal recognizing his exemplary service to his country.
He was a student at Lynchburg College for one year, where he and older brother, Winston, played on the college basketball team and were a formidable force against Lynchburg opponents. After a year, he transferred to Hampden-Sydney College, where he was an accomplished athlete in basketball and football. He graduated in 1949, and furthered his education with a Degree of Master of Arts in Education from Madison College (now James Madison University), and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from Old Dominion College.
He began a lifelong career as teacher, coach and principal at Harrisonburg High School, and a lifelong commitment as a husband and father when he met and wed Ann Hoover in 1950.Three years later, Milam accepted an offer for a professional position at his alma mater, Hampden-Sydney, serving as head basketball coach, head baseball coach, and assistant football coach. During this time, he also found great pleasure in coaching the New Market Rebels, a team in the Valley Baseball League. He and his brother formed one of the state's premier baseball umpiring teams. He was inducted into the HS-C Hall of Fame in 1996, a special honor that recognized his service as an athlete and coach.
The next chapter of his life and career took Milam and his family to Yorktown, Va., where he served briefly as principal at Yorktown Intermediate, and soon thereafter at York High School. He will be remembered fondly by YHS colleagues and students as an educator, friend and mentor for more than 27 years.
Claude Milam was a compassionate, brilliant man, both outspoken and introspective. He taught others the importance of perseverance, fairness and self-confidence, which left indelible imprints on all those whose lives he touched. A strong man of faith, Claude served actively in several churches, especially Yorkminster Presbyterian Church.
Claude was predeceased by his parents and older brother, Winston Milam.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Hoover Milam; one daughter, Vicki Milam Regetz and husband, Gerry; one son, Jeffrey Lynn Milam and wife, Seng; nine grandchildren, Kyle, Casey, and Hunter Regetz; Jason, Ben, Lindsay, Grace, Faith and Abi Milam; one brother, William Milam and wife, Shirley; one sister, Garnett Becouvarakis and husband, Stanley. Claude also leaves behind a legacy of devotion to his extended family of nieces, nephews, classmates, dear friend, Wallace Borum, and Barbara Rumph, his faithful caregiver for 11 years.
Special thanks to the Hampden-Sydney "boys", colleagues, students, neighbors and friends who have continued to bless our family with love and support over the years. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staff at Brandermill Woods Nursing Home for the care, love and support extended to Mr. Milam and also to his family. Special gratitude is also extended to the ministers and congregation at Brandermill Church and the caregivers from Bon Secours Hospice.
The family will receive friends at Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 23. A celebration of Mr. Milam's life will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at The Brandermill Church, 4500 Millridge Parkway, Midlothian, officiated by the Rev. Sandra Bottoms. Interment will be private.
Remembrances in honor of Claude may be made to The Brandermill Church, Brandermill Woods Retirement Home, or Hampden-Sydney College. Condolences may be made at www.woodyfuneralhomehuguenot.com. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Dear Vicki and Jeff,
As a YHS classmate that was between both of you (Class of '75), I must tell you what an indelible impression your Dad made on my life. Starting at Yorktown Intermediate he was a constant for me, as a coach and administrator. He was often stern, but fair. He would paddle you one day, and give you a shoulder to cry on the next. As a fatherless adolescent, he was one of the first men I really looked up to. How fortunate for me! In the annals of York High School lore, he will forever be known as a man among men. God Bless and keep you.

June 23, 2011

Vicki, your Dad was one of a kind. How he put up with me and some of our classmates is hard to fathom. My wife and me both wish you and the Milam family all the best. God Bless you all. All of you are in our prayers.

Vicki - I remember fondly my years at York High School, all of which were with your dad as Principal. My brother, Steve, felt an especially strong bond with him as part of your 1976 class. I know that if Steve were alive today he would want you to know how much he thought of your dad and would send his deepest sympathies on your loss. I pray you find comfort in your memories and the many kind words that are being shared by those who knew your dad.

What a precious man. He was my principal from 78-82. Mr. Milam was an awesome example of great morals and ethics. He always had the students' best interest at heart even if it meant going against one of his teachers. He loved us that much. I know he will be greatly missed. I pray the Lord blesses you with His comfort and grace during this difficult time.

He was a great Principle, and after so many times of me getting into trouble in High School, he was always there for me no matter what I did. He always talked to me when I did something wrong, and was like the best mentor to me. He helped me through a lot of hardships I had in my teenage years, and was a great friend to my family, and a wonderful neighbor to us in Edgehill. He was such a great man, and always cared about how I felt, and always listened to me. I really admired you Mr. Claude Miliam. I will never forget what you said to me when I walked across the stage getting my Diploma. I will always have that memory. Love, Sheila McAbee Topp

Dear Family and Friends of Mr. Milam,
I am sure you will hear this often, but Mr. Milam totally changed the direction of my life. I was the permanent substitute at York High School many years ago. Mr. Milam and I had a talk one time about my future, and he suggested I go to school to become a math teacher. I have now been teaching math for 27 years, and often think of him and how he changed my life.
I am sorry for your loss; I am sure there are more instances of how influential he was to so many people.

June 22, 2011

My condolences go to Jeff, Vicki and the Milam family. Mr. Milam was a caring and enthusiastic leader at YHS and had a great sense of humor.
Stern but correct in his role as our Principal, he will be missed. Tim Thompson, Garland, TX

I have never felt comfortable in adding my comments on obituaries, but I just can not refrain from expressing my sadness upon learning of the death of this fine man. It was my privilege to work for him for 2 years as a teacher at York High, and I can truthfully say that I have never met a more pleasant, capable, honest, sincere, understanding man. I also had the privilege of teaching his son Jeff, who was also a fine young man. To Jeff and the rest of the Milam family, I want to offer my sincere condolences to you on your loss, our loss, of this beloved man.

June 22, 2011

My sincere sympathy to the Milam family. I fondly remember Mr. Milam from Brandermill Woods. He leaves behind a legacy of love and I know how much you will miss him. God's peace to you.

As a student who graduated from York High School in 1970, I want to express my sympathies to the Milam family. I know I had more than one "little chat" in Mr. Milam's office :). After reading his story, I can see why he spent so much time trying to get us students to be the best we could be. He spent his life being the best he could be. He will be greatly missed.

During the years of 1973-1984, I had the privilege of being a business teacher at York High School when Mr. Milam was principal. I always admired his professionalism, integrity, wit and love of family and country. Mr. Milam was a terrific role model and supportive to all his staff and friends. My admiration always. Blessings to Mrs. Milam and family.

As a York High faculty member from 1966-81, I remember Mr. Milam as a good boss and a good friend. I can still see Mr. M standing tall in a black tuxedo on the auditorium stage at York High. He was the mystery guest at the DECA Variety Show, and he nailed “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” in his debut on the violin to the surprise and absolute delight of about 900 roaring spectators. I also see the smooth-swinging, left-handed golf partner at Gloucester Country Club, where we would take on some of Mr. Miller’s Tabb High faculty members. He enjoyed the camaraderie and the friendships more than he did the competition and winning.
If positive intent toward serving others from a leadership position is of value, then I can say that his intent toward making work and learning environments positive, was pure, steadfast, and done with caring, love. He was a good, likeable person and a most unforgettable character!
