Joan Cannon Obituary

Joan L. Cannon

Rockaway - Joan L. Cannon passed away at Merry Heart Nursing Home on December 1, 2017. She was 103 years old.

Joan was born in Montarsiccio in the province of Parma in Northern Italy of American parents. She immigrated to the U.S. during WWI at the age of three.

Later in her youth, she returned to Italy with her mother and attended school there for two years. She returned to the U.S., graduating from Ramsey High School. She married Alan Cannon in 1938. They owned Cannon's Confectionary in Rockaway from 1947-1950. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service and retired from Picatinny Arsenal. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Cecilia's Church in Rockaway.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Alan, her daughter Marcia Scherle and granddaughter Wendy Jerger. She is survived by her daughter Gail Gentile of Morris Plains, grandchildren Michael Gentile, Stephen Gentile, Jodi Kobylka and Beth O'Connor, ten great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

A private funeral was held with her family.
