Richard Culp Obituary

RICHARD L. CULP AGE: 79 JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP Richard L. Culp age 79, Jefferson Township, passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, at home surrounded by his family. "Dick" as he was known to friends and "Poppy Bear" as known to his family will be greatly missed. Richard was born March 22, 1929 in Huntsville, Pa. to Stanley and Rose Culp. He was the youngest of eight children. He proudly served with his National Guard unit in Germany. Upon returning home from Germany he married his one true love, Catherine "Kitty" Haughney in 1951. They settled in Jefferson Township, where they worked and raised their five children. Dick was employed by the Jefferson Township High School from its opening until his retirement 27 years later. Dick loved his community. While raising his children he was involved in several different local organizations including the Jefferson Recreation League, the Jefferson Twp. Booster club, American Legion, Milton First Aid Squad, Mountaineer Rod and Gun Club, the NRA, and the Masonic Lodge. Dick had many passions in life. He was as avid hunter and fisherman, loved sports, umpired and coached throughout his life. Dick loved his yard and garden. He and Kitty canned the many fruits of his labor. Dick was also a beekeeper, despite the help from the local bear population. Upon his retirement, Dick served on the N.J. Division of Fish and Game Council, as well as a past President of the Sussex Federation of Sportsmen. He was also a member of the Jefferson Township Board of Adjustment, the Jefferson Township Republican County Committee and the Jefferson Township Republican Club. Dick is survived by the love of his life, Catherine "Kitty" Culp, to whom he was married for 57 years; his five children, Catherine Liberti and her husband Felix of Hopatcong, Patricia Michelson and her husband Don of Landing, Stanley Culp of Jefferson Township, Richard "Rusty" Culp of Ogdensburg, and Deborah Sanchelli and her husband Michael of Jefferson Township; and his grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Jason Liberti, Ryan and Sean Michelson, Ricky, Mandy and Katie Culp and Brett and Courtney Sanchelli. He is also survived by his sister Esther Mauro and her husband Tony of Cape Coral, Fla. Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 South Main St., Wharton. Family and friends are also invited to attend his funeral at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, it was Dick's wish that contributions be made in his memory to the "Courtney Fund" c/o 6 Solar Rd., Milton, NJ 07438. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home. With many thoughts and deepest sympathy at this time. Dick will be missed by sportsmen throughout the State. It was a privilege to work with him as a biologist and more recently as a fellow Councilman.
