Margaret B. Whittington

1923 - 2014

WHITTINGTON, Margaret B. Margaret Briggs Whittington passed away on October 30, 2014. She was born May 1, 1923 in Sulphur Springs, Texas where her father, O.B. Briggs, was the newspaper editor. Her mother, Florence Briggs, was a busy homemaker as Margaret was the youngest of eight children. When Margaret was young, the family moved to Paris, Texas where she graduated from high school. She then attended and graduated from Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas. Margaret was a kind and gentle soul. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She is preceded in death by her husband Judge John Whittington. John and Margaret met when she was working at Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas and he was a sailor recently returned from WWII. They married and built a house in Irving, Texas that they shared for 59 years until John's death in 2006. At the time they purchased the lot, it was outside the city limits and the house is now within walking distance of old downtown Irving. While John built a distinguished career as a lawyer, politician and judge, Margaret was busy raising and caring for their four children. She was a PTA President, Cub Scout Den Mother, piano instructor, sports supporter and tireless volunteer in all of her children's activities. She was also deeply involved in civic, community, and church affairs and actively participated with her husband in all of his political campaigns and endeavors. Margaret and John had four children and four grandchildren including: son Mark Whittington and his wife Brenda and their two sons, Stephen and Patrick and his wife Ashley; Lynne Whittington; Jeanne Ann Whittington and Jim Halla; Maria Malcolm and husband David and their two children, Liza-Jane and Evan. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, November 5, 2014. Services will be held at Woodhaven Presbyterian Church in Irving, Texas at 2:00 pm, Thursday, November 6, 2014. Because Margaret loved books and animals, any desired memorials may be made to the Irving Public Library or Straydog animal rescue at www.straydog.org.
