News Death Notice

FLEMINGS, Vestella age 95, of Dayton, departed this life on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. She was a homemaker and was devoted to her children. Mrs. Flemings was employed at WPAFB in housekeeping during 1950 through 1960. She was also employed with DMHA as the maintenance assistant, and the Senior Citizens Club on Riverview Ave., where she served as the group President of the Senior Citizens Club. She was a home care aide before it became popular and well known as it is today. She was also a seamstress, loved to crochet, knit, free style drawing and was very creative with her hands. She confessed Christ at the age of six. In 1966, she obtained a certificate in Leadership Training Course, where she received the Distinguished Achievement Award for Demonstration of Civic Pride and Beautification of Dayton through the Community Improvement (Dayton Cleanest Neighborhood Award Contest). She moved to Dayton in 1952, where she received a certificate from Residence Park Church of Christ for completing the course "With God, you're Never Too Old". She also successfully received the National Safety Council Driver Improvement Program. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Henrietta (Allen) McGowan; husband, Jack Flemings; daughter, Sue A. (Flemings) Alston; (3) brothers, Quither, VeQuella (Annie L.) and QueVella (Gertrude) McGowan; (1) sister, Zoretha (James) Williams; maternal grandparents, Henry and Ammie Allen and paternal grandparents. Survivors include her daughters, VesZoretha Vaughn of Trotwood, OH, Connie Richardson of Dayton, OH, Sandra (Ivory) Johnson of Atlanta, GA, Etta (Charles) Hunter, Ammiegail (Richard) Winn of Dayton, OH, Debra Orr of Merrillville, IN and Alisa (Kenneth) Dabney of Englewood, OH; sons, Roger Flemings of Fairborn, OH, Rubin Flemings of Dayton, OH, Dominic (Margaret) Flemingson of Trotwood, OH and Martin Flemings of Dayton, OH and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M., MONDAY, April 7, 2014 at RESIDENCE PARK COC, 4328 Hoover Ave., with Bro. Gerald Wilder Sr., officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Interment: Jeffersonview Cemetery.
