Charles Sullivan Obituary

Charles F. Sullivan, Jr.

AGE: 82 • Wilmington

Charles Francis Sullivan, Jr., age 82, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017.

Charlie was born in Tamaqua, PA, son of the late Charles F. and Marie (McLaughlin) Sullivan. He was a graduate of St. Jerome's High School and Villanova University.

He married the love of his life, Carole Schwank on May 26, 1956 and the two moved to Delaware in 1961, when Charlie pursued a career with DuPont as a lab technician.

Charlie was a true sports enthusiast and he found his calling coaching youth sports. He was integral in the development of various sports programs in the area, most notably at St. John the Beloved, where he served as president of athletic association for several years and as boys varsity basketball coach for 30-plus years. He also coached in the Babe Ruth Little League, and assisted at Tower Hill and Tatnall high schools. Charlie was honored with the Gerald Dougherty Award for his service to CYO sports and also received recognition from the Delaware State House of Representatives. The Charlie Sullivan Award for Coaching Excellence is presented annually at the St. John the Beloved Holiday Basketball Tournament. His coaching legacy reached beyond helping young athletes on the court; he helped his players become young men. To be coached by Charlie was to forever be a part of his extended family.

His passion for coaching was only surpassed by his love for his family. Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Carole Sullivan; his children, Chuck (Renee), Ann Marie Reed (Tony), Patty O'Neal, Mike (Wendy), Tim (Michelle) and Dan (Lisa); his grandchildren, Kristen (Ernie), Sean (Sylvia), Elizabeth, Adrian, Casey, Patrick, Matt, Anthony, Jordan, Reilly, Caitlin, Connor and Shane; his great-grandchildren, Charlie, Ernie and Dylan; his brother, Jack Sullivan (Mary); and several nieces, nephews, and members of his extended family.

In addition to his parents, Charlie is preceded in death by his sisters, Catherine O'Donnell and Mary Sullivan; and his daughter, Charyl O'Shea.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 9:30am - 11:30am on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00pm. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie's memory can be made to the St. John the Beloved Athletic Association, 905 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
