John Wright Obituary

John "Jack" Moore Wright, Jr.

AGE: 92 • Glen Mills

John "Jack" Moore Wright, Jr., 92, a resident of Maris Grove, Glen Mills, PA, formerly of North Graylyn Crest, Wilmington, DE and The Belmont Community, Garnet Valley, PA, died on October 9, 2015 at Crozer Chester Medical Center of (AML) leukemia. He was born in 1923 in Richmond, VA to the late Mary Tuma Wright and John M. Wright, Sr.

Jack obtained his undergraduate schooling in the Richmond Public Schools, attending Franklin Elementary School, Bainbridge Jr. High School, and John Marshall High School, graduating in the Class of 1941. Jack was a member of the John Marshall Cadet Corps in high school.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant as a B24 bomber pilot. He was assigned to the 15th Air Force, 98th Bomb Group, based in Lecce, Italy and was credited with 43 missions over the Balkans, Northern Italy and Austria.

After the war he earned an industrial engineering degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, achieving membership in Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.

Jack was employed by the DuPont Company for 42 years, starting at the Richmond, VA Spruance Plant in July 1941. He was active in the early development of Dacron polyester fiber and Orlon acrylic fiber. He later helped in the commercial introduction and market development of several fiber products. He was a Market Strategy Manager for nylon, Orlon, and Lycra when he retired in 1986.

While living in Wilmington, Jack was a member of St. Albans Episcopal Church, serving for many years on the Finance Committee, as a Vestryman, and as Junior Warden. He helped set up the St. Albans Barnabas Fund, an outreach program, and was active in the management and operation of the fund for many years.

After retirement, Jack was a telephone listener for several years for "Contact America" and was a volunteer driver for the Red Cross. He was a member of the DuPont Country Club and was an avid golfer and bowler.

While living in Belmont, he was active in the community, counseling neighbors on procedures to reduce property taxes. He also initiated the move to create a separate zip code for the Garnet Valley region. This resulted in lower automobile insurance rates.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Doris Eaton Wright, and their two children, Barbara W. Whisman (James) and John M. Wright, III (Marian). Also surviving are five grandchildren, Shannon W. Garrity (James), Lauren W. Cahill (Duke), John M. Wright, IV (Nicole), Megan E. Wright, Brian W. Zulberti (John J. Zulberti, Brian's father) and four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Aidan, and Declan Garrity and Erin Cahill. Also surviving are sister-in-law Anne E. Bonsack, brother-in-law John R. Foster, Jr., nieces Nancy E. Bonsack and Kathleen H. Kamerick (Steve) and nephews Campbell Harris (Beth), Mitchell A. Harris (Shohreh), and Robert A.S. Wright (Lyn).

Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanne Wright Harris, his brother, Frank A.S. Wright, and nephews, Spencer Wright and John R. Foster, III.

Friends may call between 6 and 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803.
