Phillip Bishop Obituary

Phillip Adam Bishop

AGE: 27 • Hockessin

Phillip Adam Bishop, age 27, of Hockessin, DE was killed on Friday, September 12, 2014 in a cycling accident on Brackenville Road when he was struck by a motorist.

Phillip was born in Farmington Hills, Michigan on November 14, 1986 to Clyde and Johanna Bishop, the third of their four children. He moved to Hockessin with his family in 1988. A 2004 graduate of Salesianum School, he studied environmental sciences at the University of Delaware and recently was taking classes at Wilmington University. He worked as a supervisor at PureBread, and aspired to be a science teacher.

A beloved son, brother, cousin, and nephew, Phillip loved talking with people, and had an incredibly brilliant mind. He could find something in common with whomever he talked to, and was genuinely interested in the lives and passions of others. He easily talked for hours about music, philosophy, and the environmental impact of farm raised fish, and hair products alike. Phillip enjoyed cycle-commuting when the weather allowed, and spent countless hours outside working on his ever-expanding garden. It was not uncommon to visit and find out that five new fruit trees had been planted in the backyard, half with grafts of another variety growing off of them. The vegetables, fruits, and herbs that Phillip grew were never wasted - when not outside, he was playing with a new culinary dish, baking an extravagant dessert, and even brewing his own beer.

Three years ago, Phillip, his two sisters, and their dog went to the Adirondacks on their first sibling hiking trip. Phillip immediately fell in love with the grandeur of the mountains. Subsequent trips were taken to New Hampshire and Montana. This past summer, Phillip and his sisters spent the summer out West, hiking the backcountry of Olympic and Grand Teton National Parks, on a "once-in-a-lifetime epic cross-country adventure". The siblings drove across the United States, camping at parks along the way, including stopping in Yellowstone at midnight to watch Old Faithful erupt under a full moon. Phillip was awed by the spectacular beauty to be found in this country; he could not wait to start planning his next trip.

But above all else, Phillip truly loved and valued his family. He is survived by his parents, Clyde (Ed) and Johanna Bishop; siblings, Michael, Sophia, and Liesbeth Bishop, half-brother Richard Bishop; niece Elizabeth Bishop; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and beloved family dog, Fawn. He was preceded in death by his half-brother, John Bishop.

A viewing will be held 6pm-9pm Thursday, September 18, 2014 at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. Guests are invited to gather at the Redfire Grill, 400 Lantana Drive, Hockessin, DE 19707, from 7:30pm-11pm to celebrate Phillip's life after the viewing. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 10:30am at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. A Memorial Luncheon to follow at Hartefeld National, One Hartefeld Drive, Avondale, PA 19311.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring the memory of Phillip by sending a contribution to Bike Delaware: www.bikede.org/phillip.

I vaguely recall perhaps briefly meeting Phillip at the Salesianum graduation in 2004. However, I know he was a very dear friend and classmate thoughout high school to my son Kyle, who passed on this very devastating news to me as he about to leave for a West coast trip. From my recollection of Phil thru Kyle's high school days and what I read, Phil seemed so heartbreakingly so very much like Kyle --- his love of biking, healthy eating, good conversation, Philosophy and French. My son Kyle often spoke fondly of Phil during their time at Salesianum and I know they strongly bonded while we lived in DE. What a beautiful son you raised. I will keep you and your family in my prayers always.

Dear Bishop family,

I just this morning learned of Phil's passing while at the Greenville PB store. I am absolutely heartbroken. Your son was a lovely, kind and bright man. He always met me with a smile. I enjoyed chatting with him, laughing and I always left feeling happy after my interactions with him. This past July I gifted him a Giggle On t-shirt and took this photo of him, on his bike, outside the Greenville store. This is how I will remember him. I will miss chatting with him about his adventures and ideas. I know he would want me, and everyone who knew him, to keep the positive energy going...so Phil, I promise to keep the smiles going.

Dear Bishop family,

I knew Phillip only from my visits to Purebread. We'd often chat about work or being outside, he on his bike or me walking. Phillip was unfailingly sweet, charming and full of life. My heart breaks for your loss. I know he touched so many lives in his short one.

The entire Dignan family is deeply saddened by Phil's death. We have know Phil since 2000 when my son Michael and Phil became fast friends at Salesianum School, a relationship that has lasted for the past 14 years. My wife Carol taught Phillip at Salesianum - my daughter Claire was always close with all her brother's friends, especially Phil because he was younger than her, but a grade ahead. He was a brilliant thinker, good friend, and the nicest person you would ever want to know. I was always proud of my children's choice of a friend like Phil. We are all devastated by his passing. May God bless and take away the pain of this horror from his family. The John and Carol Dignan family - Michael Dignan and Claire Dignan LaRoche
