Age 86, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at home on May 22, 2007, surrounded by his loving family.
He was a World War II veteran and served our country as a medical technician in the Phillipines. Bill was employed as a machinist for Amtrak for 40 years. After retiring in 1976, Bill and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. He was especially fond of the Canadian Rockies and Lake Louise. Bill's interests included photography, international history, reading and governmental policy. He was a talented baseball player throughout his life. He enjoyed his daily walks at Delcastle, and cherished spending time with his family. He was truly a very proud and supportive grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Catherine R.; son, William J. Swiatek; daughters, Carole Chaplow, of Landenberg, PA, and Rose, of Wilmington, DE; 5 adored grandchildren, Theodore J. Swiatek, of Lansing, MI, William J. Swiatek Jr., of Newark, DE, Joseph Chaplow, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Tammy Beeson, of Newark, DE, and Lori T. Chaplow, of Landenberg, PA; beloved sister, Josephine Thompson, of Newark DE; and many nephews, nieces and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Helen Swiatek; grandson, Jeffrey Chaplow; brothers, Frank Kozlewski, Joseph Swiatek, Edward Swiatek, and Vincent Swiatek; and sister, Catherine Czajkowski.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Depietropaolo and the staff at Heartland Hospice for the tender care of dad in his final days and for the kindness and support given to our family. We'd also like to thank Dr. Ashlesha Chaughule, Dr. I. Amini, and Dr. Barry Denenberg, for keeping his heart going; Dr. Wesley Emmons for his expertise in getting dad well enough to enjoy some precious time with his family, and also for the patience and kindness answering our many questions, and the staff at the Christiana Hospital and Specialty Select Hospital for their proficiency and gentleness. Thanks also to the staff at the Helen Graham Center, especially Jean Casper for her guidance, and Drs. Steven Grubb and Charles Schneider for their compassion and candor. Lastly, we would like to thank Drs. Michael Peters, David Cozzolino and Steven Terranova for their expertise, integrity and honesty. You gave us the precious gift of time with dad and we are truly grateful.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi RC Church, 901 New Road, Elsmere on Saturday, May 26, at 10:30 am. Friends may call at the Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy., Elsmere on Saturday from 9-10 am. Interment in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.
