Harold Huffington Obituary

Harold "Huff" Huffington

Salisbury-Harold "Huff" Huffington of Salisbury, Maryland, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 19, 2014. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 16, 1925. Huff was a proud and decorated United States Marine. A veteran of World War II, he made 3 amphibious combat landings under heavy fire on the island of Tinian, Saipan, and the Marianas with the 2nd Marine Division. He also served as part of the US Occupational Force in Nagasaki, Japan in 1945.

Following his return from the war, he attended Baltimore City Community College. Huff was an AAA Championship Series race car driver and competed against Indianapolis 500 contestants on tracks throughout the East Coast, including the famed Williams Grave Race Track in Pennsylvania and the Syracuse Mile at the New York Fairgrounds.

He had a very successful career in the insurance business throughout Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia, which culminated in him retiring as Vice President of Avery Hall Insurance Agency in Salisbury, Maryland in September, 1991. During his time working in West Virginia, he met and married the former Doris Ann Ramsey on April 18, 1961. They were married for 53 years.

Huff was a great humanitarian and served his community in a number of capacities. He was a champion and supporter of those battling addictions. In support of those individuals, Huff actively served on the Board of Directors of Hudson Health Services and Second Wind Halfway House in Salisbury. He was a longtime active member of Wicomico Presbyterian Church in Salisbury, where he served as Clerk of the Session for more than 30 years. Huff also represented his church in various leadership and ministry roles as a part of the New Castle Presbytery and the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic of the Presbyterian Church (USA). He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge No.817 in Salisbury, serving as Treasurer. He was a stranger to no one and a friend to everyone. He was a member of the Allen Historical Society.

Huff is survived by his loving wife, Doris, his two daughter, Denise Zucchelli of Parsonsburg, MD and Margaret Ellen Carte and her husband, Cam, of Harrisonburg, VA, and his son, Michael Cook and his wife, Liz, of Bolton, MA. He is also survived and deeply missed by his grandchildren, Nichole Zucchelli of Sonoma, CA, Philip Zucchelli of Petaluma, CA, Jenna Zucchelli of Phoenix, AZ, Jordan and Maddy Carte of Harrisonburg, VA and Ian Cook of Gardner, MA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Marie Huffington.

A memorial service for Huff will be held on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 11 am at Wicomico Presbyterian Church. A visitation will be held on hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Dr. Donald Rising will officiate. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wicomico Presbyterian Church, 129 Broad St., Salisbury, MD 21801 or Coastal Hospice at the Lake, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.

Dear Doris and family, I am very sorry for our loss. "Huff" is one of the finest men I have ever known and will surely be missed by many. He was a wonderful "family man," Marine and citizen and I am a better person for having known "Huff." Our prayers to you and the family. Much love, Jim and Sue Mallory

Our fathers depart, but never their love and never the lessons they've taught us. Never their guidance, never their blessings, never the joys they've brought us.
