Ann Maughan Obituary

October 25, 1906 - February 20, 2012
105 years ago, Ann was born in Rexburg, Idaho on October 25, 1906 to Annie Elisabeth Scarborough Petersen of Franklin, Idaho, and Soren Petersen of Logan, Utah. She was the youngest and darling of seven children: Soren Lester, Charles Vincent, Theodore, Mary Elsie (Peterson), Thelma (Gardner), and Eldon. Ann moved with her family to Logan, Utah at the age of two. Soon after, the Maughans moved to Portland, Oregon where Ann attended Washington High School and Oregon State College for two years. She then moved to Salt Lake City to finish her studies at the University of Utah (U of U), and graduated with a B.S. in Home Economics in 1930. She met her husband, Peter Alton Maughan (Alt) of Logan, UT at a Utah State University military ball during Ann's senior year at the U of U. They courted and corresponded for five years while Alt worked predominantly in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania as an electrical engineer for Westinghouse. While Alt was out East, Ann moved to Los Angeles to establish sorority chapters for a women's business sorority. She also was a model and window host, demonstrating new fangled home appliances.
Ann married her beloved Alt on December 24, 1934 in Los Angeles, California. The newlyweds moved to Salt Lake City and Alt purchased an electrical engineering company, Capital Electric, which was instrumental in advancing the wiring of many Salt Lake buildings and allowed him to remain at home. Ann and Alt had two children, Mary Ann (Atkisson) and Michael (Mickey). Ann, Alt, and their children were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on October 31, 1950.
Ann survived the passing of her husband and children. Mickey died at the age of 26 in 1971, leaving behind a wife, Terri, one daughter, Christine, and a son to be, Michael. Alt died on the same date as Mickey in 1978. Mary Ann died in 2010.
Ann led a service-filled and happy life. She remained in her lovely home until the age of 101 and retained her driver's license until she was 96. Ann faithfully served in various callings in the LDS Church as member of the Monument Park 2nd Ward, which included: Genealogist, Relief Society President, preparing eight-year-olds for baptism, Sunday School Teacher, and in several other roles.
Ann was also active in the larger Salt Lake community as a Co-Chairman for the Salt Lake County Utah Cancer Society, a secretary for a political society's women's auxiliary, a leader in Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and a Hostess at the LDS Church's office building for many years. At the age of 99, she received the Exemplary Alumna award from University of Utah's College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Ann enjoyed many hobbies and developed numerous talents including: baking and entertaining, quilting, traveling, baptismal scrapbooks (for dozens of eight-year-olds), nutrition, interior designing and gardening in her home, doing good for neighbors, genealogical research, and writing encouraging letters to family and friends. She also wrote several children's books in her 90s and was a master Scrabble player up until her passing.
Her strong belief in education, along with the establishment of a tuition program, inspired and enabled several of her grandchildren to attend and finish college. In her later years she developed a love of politics and enjoyed carrying on a lively debate.
Ann's unmistakable, charm, wit, inner strength, and humor will be greatly missed by her surviving family members and friends, including her son-in-law, Curtis, daughter-in-law, Teri, 13 grandchildren and their spouses, 39 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and other extended family. She was cheerful and loving to the end. May we have the faith to follow the path of her exemplary life.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 25 at 11:00 AM at the Arlington Hills Ward, 1300 East Fairfax Road. Friends may call on Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, and again Saturday morning 9am-10:30am at the church prior to services. Words cannot do justice to the power, beauty, grace and charm of this loving elect lady. She came into my families life in 1971 and I will be forever grateful for her loving example of unwavering acceptance and generosity. Our children call her Grandma and I look to her as my second mother. May your days now be spent with Grandpa, Mary Ann, Mick and your Peterson family that you loved so much. I will never forget you and your example. Thank you for setting the bar high for all of us to follow.

We consider ourselves blessed to have known Ann, if only for the last 5+ years. What a terrific lady!

Aunt Ann tried hard to protect her children and my brother, John and I, from the polio epidemic in the early 1940s. She had an amazing fly trap in the back yard but we 4 children did not like the boiled then chilled milk which was part of the cautionary new regime. When she left the dining room ran to the kitchen sink and poured it out!

Ann Maughan and her family were a big part of my growing up in the Monument Park Ward. She and my mother were good friends and worked in the Relief Society together for many many years. She was a true lady and an incredible person with many talents, as well as being a strong person when she had so many tragedies in her life. A true joy to know. I am sorry for your loss, but her joy at being with her family must be great!

I am so sorry to read of the loss of Ann. She and Mary Ann were so generous with pictures and family information for the completion of our Peter Maughan book. I am amazed at her age and accomplishments in the many years of her life. May the Lord bless each of you. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
