Dale Barratt Obituary

Dale Coulam Barratt
5/22/1949 ~ 11/11/2014
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away Tuesday morning after courageously and humbly enduring his 3 ½ year battle with "stupid" ALS.
Dale was born May 22, 1949 in Salt Lake City to Eloise Coulam and John W. Barratt. Dale attended Highland High School, served in the Utah Air National Guard and graduated from the University of Utah where he met the love of his life, Laurie Polson. Dale and Laurie were married on June 11, 1970 in the Salt Lake Temple. Shortly after they were married, they moved to their first house on Stratford Avenue where they made friends for life and started their family. Dale began his career in the insurance industry as a commercial underwriter, where he was well known as an expert in his field for the next thirty years. Their family continued to grow and in 1979 they moved to their current home in Holladay where they were blessed with more great friends.
Dale was an expert woodworker and enjoyed making much of the furniture in his home. One of Dale's proudest accomplishments was completing a family room addition to their home. He could fix anything - he was an electrician, a plumber and an auto mechanic. He was an avid outdoorsman who grew up hunting, camping and fishing with his parents - traditions he carried on with his children. He loved spending time with his family on the golf course, where he taught them to "swing easy." He and Laurie enjoyed traveling and have special memories in Europe and Mexico. They loved attending their children's and grandchildren's sporting events and performances.
Some of Dale's favorite things include: tools, St. George, his backyard deck, long bike rides, driving his Corvette, the swing of a golf club and a hot dog cooked over a campfire and slathered in mustard.
Dale was a lifelong member of the LDS faith and exercised his priesthood in both church callings and at home as father and husband. He and Laurie were blessed with six children who were the pride of his life.
Dale is survived by his wife Laurie Barratt; his children Brett Barratt, Kimberly Jensen (Brent), Greg Barratt (Shelly), Kristen Hunter (Aaron), Jeff Barratt (Megan) and his youngest daughter Kaitlin, with whom he had a special bond. He is also survived by his sisters Carol Frost and Jeanne Farnsworth. Dale is the proud "Pops" of 11 beautiful grandchildren who enjoyed his backyard zipline, warm smile, homemade wooden block sets and other thoughtful inventions.
The family would like to thank all of the dedicated friends and caregivers who gave him comfort and aid during his time of need.
Dale had many mottos in life including, "don't force anything," "slow down [Laurie]" and the most fitting was "pack light." Ironically, as he leaves for his next adventure, he is packed heavy with a legacy of service, love and memories of the many lives he has touched.
There will be a viewing at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Friday 11/14 from 6 to 7:30 pm. Another viewing will be held Saturday 11/15 from 10 to 11am prior to the funeral service, which will start at 11:30am at the LDS Chapel on 5400 South Holladay Boulevard.

I worked with Dale many years ago at Travelers Insurance. He gave me a chance to shine. He was always a good sport and wonderful boss. I too lost someone I loved to ALS. Even though it was only a brief amount of time...Dale touched my life. I hope he knew that. Rest in Peace.

Laurie, I suppose I met Dale only at the old Robinson family reunions, which were great fun. I offer my deepest sympathy on your loss.

Laurie - Kent and I will treasure the many wonderful memories of spending time with you and Dale through the years. We have admired your great ability as parents in raising a beautiful family, especially your tender and loving ways with little Katie. You have always been an example that we have held to the highest esteem. We loved Dale's dry wit, his creative talents, and his dedicated work ethic. We will always remember his ingenious Halloween costumes. his great golf swing, his fabulous tux with the flashing lights and his patience with a wife who could not make up her mind. Even in the end he managed to make us feel better. I felt pretty special the other day when I told him I was still the most attractive woman in the ward and he actually gave me a gratuitous smile. We loved Dale and he will be sorely missed forever. Giauques

Laurie and Family, we are sadden by the passing of Dale. He is leaving a great void to you and many others. As has been mentioned, we will miss his many talents and jokes. One of my best memories is of the last time the four of Dale, Dean, Kevin and I played golf together. After a few holes he said he could not continue any further. I was riding in the golf cart with him, so we just rode in the cart and kind of followed Dean and Kevin. It gave us time to talk about things other than golf. He kind of talked about is testimony. He talked about you Laurie, his love for you. He talked about each of his children, how proud he was of them and of there many accomplishment. May the Lords tender mercies be with each you.

Laurie I am so sorry Dale was taken way too soon. Time and distance kept Dale and I apart for many years. In our younger days he was about the closest thing I could have had to a brother. He was loved.

Laurie... Suz called me today and told me about Dale. We just wanted you to know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Suz and, Del and Shelley have kept us posted the last couple of years when we've asked about Dale. Your family is amazing and you and Dale both made memories with your family that will last a lifetime. Lots of Love, Susie and Carter

Dear Laurie and family,
I was so saddened to learn of Dale's passing. It is such a void that is left that can only be filed with the Spirit and the flood of happy memories of a lifetime well lived. I am sorry I will be out of town for the service, but know that you and your family are in my thoughts.

I knew that when Laurie called me Tuesday morning that Dale had returned home. Dale had no idea how many people loved him and enjoyed being with both he and Laurie. Nancy and I went on many trips with them, but Maui was our favorite. I will miss his dry sense of humor, wry smile, humorous emails and long talks about politics and religion. Dale wasn't impressed with high church callings, he just quietly touched the lives of all of us through his friendship and service. I don't think he realized that he exemplified the Savior's teachings through his actions. I pray that Laurie and their family realize that Dale is healthy, happy and waiting for the day they will all be together again.

Brett and Family,

We are saddened by the news of the passing of your father. Details of his life were expressed very eloquently in his obituary. We appreciated the opportunity to read about some of the highlights in your father's life.

May the many memories you shared with your father bring you peace and comfort.

Sincerely,

I was sad to learn today of the passing of a good friend and the best next door neighbor I've ever had. We lost a good man. Dale was always kind to me and my family and we enjoyed countless chats and worked on several projects together over the years. Dale and I enjoyed a special connection, shared many interests and our personalities meshed with each other's as well as any could. I've missed Dale for the last several years, especially as the e-mail messages and phone calls trailed off as he could no longer easily communicate due to the disease's effects. I feel a deep loss today. I'm relieved for Dale and for his family as I know a tremendous burden has been lifted and am confident in Dale's restored future on the other side. I pray for peace and comfort for Dale's wonderful wife and children as they remember and mourn the loss of a man who will always be special to me.
