Eric Nelson Obituary

Feb 16, 1953 ~ Feb 17, 2015
After brief care for kidney failure, Eric Peter Nelson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the University of Utah Hospital. Eric was a gentle soul who lived a remarkable independent life, in spite of suffering the debilitating effects of youth onset schizophrenia. Eric's humble nature and gracious demeanor will be remembered by all who knew him. He demonstrated genuine gratitude for family and caretakers, including the years of service he received through the Valley Mental Health System. Eric was a quiet member of Alliance House, whose mission is to enable their members to return "back to school" or "back to work". Eric will be dearly missed by all of the members of his close family, who have admired his quiet staying power and resilience.
He will always be remembered by his family, including parents: Norman D. and Janet H. Nelson; siblings Christina Nelson McLaren (Kent) of Laguna Niguel, California; Hope Nelson Lovill (James) of Fairfax, California; Sara Nelson Bradshaw (Matt) of Scottsdale Arizona and J. Dana Nelson (Alayna) of Salt Lake City, Utah.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Alliance House, 1724 South Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84115 (www.alliancehouse.org)
A viewing will be held Thursday night February 19, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive Salt Lake City, Utah. A graveside service for family and close friends will be held on Friday February 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.

Dear Norm and Jan, I want to let you know how sad I am to hear about Eric's death. I truly remember him as a kind and best young childhood friend. He is always one of the first people to come to mind when I think of growing up in the foothills of Mount Olympus. Thanks so much for your kindness to me and to my parents, Rod and Claire. I wish peace and gratitude to your family...for Eric and for your work to support him with so much love.

I loved to play with Eric as a child. He will always hold a special place in my heart along with all the Nelsons. At last he is free from his earthly limitations and can soar with the Angels of Heaven. Robert Birkinshaw

Jan/Norm/and siblings of Eric:
I only learned of Eric's passing moments ago. Am so sorry I didn't get to see all of you to personally offer my deepest condolences. Eric had some difficult terrain in this world, but with the constant love and support from his family he managed to have a good life. Please know I am thinking of all of you at this time. Dear Jan and Norm,
I just heard about Eric's passing.
Eric was my age, and I remember him well through all the years of school and in the 12th ward.
I always liked Eric. He was kind and soft-spoken and fun to be around.
Also, I will always be thankful for you, Jan, as my young women leader. You took an interest in me, for which I am grateful. I look up to you in many ways.
Wishing your family the best.
With love,
Louise Williams Nelson

Norm and Jan - I never had the pleasure of meeting Eric, however, the work you both did in the field of mental health in his honor and for him is remarkable and leaves a lasting legacy for others. I am so sorry for your loss and send you all the best during this difficult journey of grief.

Dear Norm & Jan,
How sad to see your son's name on this list. Eric's challenged life & your response to it has enriched so many thousands of others with the founding of Alliance House, the Utah Alliance for the Mentally Ill, new legal protections, insurance coverage, & major education advances.
Your loss also is ours, but his life and legacy is, and will continue to be, an enduring gift to multitudes of beneficiaries.

I remember Eric mostly when I was a child, when my dad was working and we sometimes ran errands to help Eric. He was so gentle and nice despite all that he was going through, and even as a child he made me feel at ease. I remember him being so thoughtful when he asked how i was. He was definitely one of my dad's life-long friends. It will be great to see him on the "other side".

Dear Norm & Jan and Nelson Siblings:
What a good and loving person is Eric Nelson. How blessed is each person privileged to be among those whose lives were touched by him. Like a ship, while you and we all say "there he goes," here, many are saying, with joy, "here he comes," in Heaven, where is certainly now dwells. May the good Lord continue to comfort and cheer you. Love, Dave & Terese

I am so glad to have known Eric. What a sweet man he was. Every time he came into the clubhouse I made it a goal to engage him in conversation and what a delight it was when it happened! He will be missed.

I have a vivid memory of Eric sitting on our fireplace hearth each morning waiting for my brother Casey to be ready for school. Casey was rarely ready to go when Eric got there. I was 4 years younger and Eric was always kind to me while he waited. I will also never forget Eric's piranha fish. I was so intrigued with them! Eric has battled a challenge in life that most of us never face. He has battled well and has been an example of perseverance and determination. Good Bye Eric. I am so glad you are free.
