My friendship with Jim started before I was hired on the Salt Lake City Fire Dept. I had taken the test and was put on the eligibility list at number 16 out of 600 applicants. It still took a year after that to get hired. He would come and visit and he showed me the ropes. He was like a mother hen and took me under his wings. It was nice to know that a kid from California had someone who had his back. When I did get hired, my wife and I bought our first house, and Jim and Phyllis were the ones who helped move us out there. That was 45 years ago (and I'm sure Phyllis doesn't remember it). I truly appreciated their kindness in helping us during a difficult time.
Jim worked out at the airport and I worked at various stations in the city so we never got to work together much. Once as a "boot" I swung out to the airport and Jim showed me how all the specialized equipment and the crash trucks worked. I felt like I was in over my head and was glad he was there to help me along if we had an emergency. I was glad we didn't have an emergency that shift.
Our hearts, Diane's and mine, go out to Phyllis and her family during this time of loss. Jim was one of the "good guys".

Dear Mindy, Addie and Family,

You are in our thoughts and prayers and sending much comfort and peace. The obituary was so lovely and really captured what a wonderful father, grandfather, husband and patriot he was. May we all have that grit, determination and service mentality in our lives each day. LOVE YOU ALL.

"FINAL ALARM"
Rest now our brother firefighters
Lay soft your suffering back
Rest well and forever
Your memory shall not lack
Rest your tired hands
Wipe clean your weary brow
Rest with St. Florian
Your spirit now endowed
Rest here your heart
We know you gave your all
Rest easy, you've done your part
and now you've answered your last call
As we ring the final bell.
