LaRUE HONE Obituary

Ethel LaRue Yardley Powers Stevenson Anderson Kump Hone Kaysville, Utah Momma was a pistol. She married five men and outlived four of them. On Tuesday she slipped, fell, and broke her hip. And then, she slipped away from us all early Friday morning, December 31, 2010.Ethel LaRue Yardley was born March 14, 1921 to Russell Samuel and Ethel May Gill Yardley in Christianburg, UT. She was the middle child, with four brothers and two sisters. She loved every minute of growing up on the farm and much preferred being in the field and on the horses with her Dad and three older brothers. Grandpa reminded her daily to spend time in the house helping her mother. LaRue attended George Washington Elementary School, Gunnison Valley junior and senior high schools. She graduated in May 1939 and moved to Salt Lake City where she worked as a companion for two elderly women. During the early war years she was a driver for the military. LaRue is preceded in death by husbands: Frank Powers, divorced, 1945; Don Stevenson, married November 1948, died in an automobile accident, June 1952; Gene Anderson, married June 1953, died in a farming accident August 1956; Arlo Z. Kump, married September 1964, died December 31, 1994 from complications of heart surgery. Also preceded in death by children: Kathy Burcham, Kerry Kump, David Kump, and grandchildren: Nicoy Anderson, and Donnie Kump. LaRue married John E. Hone in November, 1995. As a single parent, Mom worked hard to provide a comfortable life for her children. She was not perfect-stubborn to a fault for one thing. She taught us many truths: It is not what others think, but what you know to be true that matters; You may as well be happy as sad, because at least you will feel better; If the gossips are talking about you, then at least they are giving someone else a rest. Momma could earn money, plant a lawn, grow a garden (remember the tomatoes), can fruits and vegetables, kill a chicken, and shoot a buck. She was a fabulous home-style cook-Sunday dinners were unforgettable. She taught us how to eat a proper steak: medium rare, thank you. The love between Arlo Kump and LaRue allowed the creation of our large and wonderful family. Their children include: Richard and Kathy Burcham (deceased), Silver City, NM; Russell C Stevenson, Ogden; Kerry (deceased) and Nancy Kump, Bluffdale; David and Sharon Stevenson, Mayfield; Penni and Theldon Myrup, Gunnison; Dawn Stevenson, Salt Lake City; Debra Marshall, Bountiful; Rick and Julie Kump, Taylorsville; Scott and Julie Kump, West Valley; Nick and Roylene Anderson, Meridian, ID; and David (deceased) and Diane Kump, San Diego, CA. They have 28 grandchildren and plenty of great grandchildren. From her marriage to John Hone, LaRue has two step-children Ted and Marsha Hone, Sandy; Mike and Stacy Hone, Payson; and Kevin and Tracy Thurston and all of their children and grandchildren. Mom became active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints later in life-appropriate, hey? She loved her callings as Stake Relief Society Secretary, Relief Society teacher and temple worker at the Manti Temple. She is survived by: Mary Yardley, Ehpraim; Ruth Althea Yardley, Chandler, AZ; Beth Shurtleff, Manti; Gill and Marlene Yardley, Manti; Lee and JoAnn Anderson, Gunnison; and the wonderful family of John Hone. She is also preceded in death by: brother and sister-in-law Thomas R. and Loa Yardley; brother and sister-in-law Birdell and LeOra Yardley; brother Howard Yardley, brother-in-law and wife Oras and Barbara Anderson. Mom and John moved to Apple Tree Assisted Living Center in Kaysville, in January, 2007. They always wished they were still in Sanpete County, but grew to appreciate the necessity of being where we could care for them. The staff of Apple Tree loved and took wonderful care of our mother. And we love them all for their kindness and service to Mom and John. Thanks also to Hospice of Utah, especially Lisa Lassiter, Stephanie Draper, Lisa Harrison, Kevin the Chaplain, and Heather the Social Worker. We also express our gratitude to Dr. James Stewart and Dr. Kristie Oberg at Davis Hospital and Medical Center for their kindness and wisdom during these last days, and to the staff at Avalon Care Center in Bountiful. We think Momma went off dancing tonight. We hope you do the same. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mayfield LDS Chapel where friends may call Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday morning 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Manti City Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti. Online guestbook at www.maglebymortuay.com

Sympathies and best wishes to all of the families graced by the love of this wonderful woman. She was always pleasant and friendly. Gunnison was a better place because she lived there. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you but especially John, who will miss her greatly.

I was saddened to hear about about Larue's passing but know she was anxious to get on with her journey. I was lucky enough to have had Sunday dinners with John and Larue at Appletree for a year and get to know her. She was truly an amazing woman who experienced more than many of us ever will. She regaled us with stories and reminisced about her kids and growing up in Sanpete County. She had a beautiful smile and a great hug.
I am sure she will be missed by so many friends and her large extended family but will be just as popular in Heaven as she was on earth.
Good luck Larue!

Sorry to hear about LaRue. I met her in Gunnison when we worked in the office at Doves (grocery store)in 1987 or there abouts. She was quite a character and we had everyone going with LaRue and LaRae in the office. Saw her in Vernal once since then but I do think about her often. Doves was the first job in 20 yrs, other than being a stay at home Mom, that I had and she helped me alot. Deepest sympathy to all of her family.

We will miss grandma LaRue. She was a life saver to grandpa Hone when he needed a companion. They took good care of each other for 16 years. Heavenly Father will take good care of her now.

I wish I'd gotten the chance to know Aunt LaRue better in my adult years. I have to admit--when I was little she scared the pants off me! Visiting her house was about one of the only times that Beorn and I didn't argue or fight - we were too afraid to act up. I think after raising such a big family, she didn't put up with any nonsense. I realize now that the practical attitude she used to run her household simply extended to unruly nieces and nephews. I am grateful for the handful of times that I got to visit with your mom over the past couple of years. I got to see her sense of humor and love of family, and I realized the younger me had always been wrong about Aunt LaRue.

You are all in our thoughts and hearts during this difficult time.

We don't know your mom but we wished we had. What a delightful woman. What a special daughter of God. Thank you for her life and her words of wisdom. May the Lord comfort you; may you feel honored to be a part of her life. Thank you for your mom's memory this morning!
