Memories and Condolences
for Newell Knight

Not sure what to say?

Brett and Dianna Kearney

May 5, 2007

We have just heard about Newell's passing and want to send our love and condolences. We have not been in touch for many years, but Brett worked with Newell in the Young Men's Presidency in the Taylorsville 3rd Ward. We have not forgotten Newell's thoughtful leadership and excellent example. You both welcomed us into your home and our children had the pleasure of having Newell demonstrate his "marble machine" to them. Even now when we see an episode of The Andy Griffith Show on T.V. we think of Newell telling us how he would come home for lunch every day from work and watch it, calling it his "police training film!" We love Newell and mourn with you at this time.
Much love,
Brett and Dianna Kearney

Denece

I was not told until today that Newell had passed away or that he had been ill for sometime. He has always been a good friend and I have appreciated knowing him and all of you.

I think of him as a prankster with a heart of gold. I may not be a part of the family now, but I have always felt the love of the family as a friend.

There will be an empty spot in my heart now that he has gone to the other side and I look forward to seeing him again someday.

May the Lord bless you and your family at this time.

As an attorney, I worked with Newell on many cases, sometimes we went to trial and others not, but his insight and expertise were always appreciated. Juries loved Newell because he taught them and answered the questions lingering in back of their minds. When time allowed, we talked about airplanes and flying. My condolences.

Arla and I offer our deepest sympathies to Denece and your entire family. Our love and thoughts are with you.
The 30 yr.+ friendship we have forged, has given us an opportunity to know a truly unique individual in Newell. Newell's ability to genuinely connect with people of all walks of life, is affirmed in the comments provided in this Guest Book. He deeply touched and enriched our lives with his wit, compassion and simple goodness to his fellow human beings. Newell walked his talk. He exemplified the best of God's children. Newell we will miss you, though you are with us often.

Love,

Rod & Arla

Like many others, I learned the ways of the legal world from Newell. He handled many investigations for me over the years and I had the joy and privilege of traveling with him on occassion. I will miss him and the "out of the blue" phone calls to brag about his fishing escapades. What a great man!! My thoughts and condolences to his family.

I express my deepest condolences
to the family. I knew Newell more through work as I worked Westside with the SL CO Sheriff Dept for 20+ years. he is one of the kindest men I ever knew and the most knowledgeable. My sons spoke of him often, and kept me informed on his condition as they thought a lot of him as he always had good things to say to them. Newell will be greatly missed yet we know he is no longer with pain

Newell was as fine a man as you would want to know. I knew and worked with him for more than 20 years as an accident reconstructionist, but he was much more than that. He was a mentor, a friend, and quite a story teller. He was honest, loyal, and the best at what he did. I'm proud to have considered him a friend. God's speed Newell, our thoughts and prayers at Strong & Hanni will be with your family.

He was well known to FBI Agents in Salt Lake City. I came to SLC in 1976 and soon met this Chief Investigator. He had stories from all walks of life and loved by all the good guys. He was a member of Strawberry Anglers Association and
a real buddy of Richard Grant Taylor. I'm sorry I did not bake more bread for he and his family. I also wish I could have gone to Ak
with him and dick and catch the big one. We send our sympathy to the family and will miss him.
With love, Loren and Julie Brooks,
(former FBI Agent) Bountiful, Utah.

I knew Newell on a professional basis as he would review new cases for me. I always trusted his opinions and looked forward to working with him. Not only was he very talented at his profession, but he was an absolute delight to be around. We will all miss him.

When I was a young prosecutor Newell would be my expert witness for DUI cases. I think we had more than 100 jury trials together and he was always prepared and reliable. Many interesting times too numerous to mention here.
After his retirement from UHP he helped me on numerous cases with his accident reconstruction skills.
Newell was a fine man, a gentleman and a friend.
My condolences to his family.

I always considered Newell the wise and kindly teacher when we worked together on the Highway Patrol. Full of wit and constant mischief, he almost seemed arrogant because he was so bright and thought so far ahead of everyone else, there can never be a replacement for such a good guy as Newell. In every situation, he first thought of the welfare of those who needed help the most. Kind, always considerate, Newell was the most competent investigator I've ever known and as honest a man who has ever lived. His skills, integrity and thirst for truth will be sorely missed. He was among the best of men. Newell, you will be missed and always in our thoughts. Thank you for all your help over the years.

I worked with Newell at the Utah Highway Patrol from 1971 to 1977. I was a secretary is an adjoining office---Port of Entry.

Denece---you may remember the year that Elva Mortensen and I came to your house to see Newell on Halloween dressed up as "ladies of the night". That was such great fun!

I think all of the patrol people who worked in the offices when I was there have passed away except John D. Roger, Howard Newman, and Mac Helm.

My last name was AYLETT when I worked for UHP.

My thoughts are with you and your family. It seems like I have known you and Newell forever; as a child, I remember with fondness that fact that Newell always treated me as a friend, not just a little kid.
May the Lord bless you all.

Newell and I first met when I was curious if he was, or related to SLC's historian. After talking to him from time to time he was not but was distanly related. We visited now and then as time went by. He was a great guy to sit down and talk to about this and that.

I've known Newell professionally for many years. His stories and anecdotes (especially about the ones that got away) will be missed. He made our relationship more than just an ordinary business relationsip with his genuine friendliness and caring. I will miss working with him and seeing him. God Bless your family at this sad time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

April 12, 2007

My closest friend whether at Strawberry in the middle of the night, in Alaska at Doc Warners, playing raquetball together 3 times a week, or anything else we did together. I used to tell him that he was like a Father to me (but that always prompted a negative response), so I changed it to a brother (that I never had). He was such a "brick" through all of this. I can still remember the morning that he told me about the cancer. He was very sad, but for the most part he kept his spirits up right to the end for everyone else as well as for himself. A friend to everyone. He will be missed many times.

We never thought that this would happen for a long time. Newell had the energy of 4 men and worked really hard at being a friend. When our family moved into this ward, he and Denise were there to great us at church. I worked with Newell in Scouts and watched him as he encouraged the boys to succeed in what they did. We rolled up our sleeves and worked together doing welfare assignments and I always enjoyed his humor. I believe he loved to quote from Elder Richard L. Evans and he always had a thought that went along with the lessons. Sorrow is not with Newell because he will be in a better place, so our prayers and love will be with you, Denise and your family. My acquaintance with Newell was strictly a business one, as I worked in an insurance office where his accident reconstruction services were often used. As was previously mentioned, it was always a happy day when Newell visited our office. His cheery disposition was ever present, even during the months when we were aware that his health wasn't all that good. One word summing up Newell to me (well, two actually) "Complete integrity". His friendship and delightful personality will be missed by many.

I worked as a receptionist at an office Newell did business with. It was always such a wonderful day when he would come in. I was always so happy to see his smiling face come through the door. You could truly see the kindness shining from his eyes. The other receptionists here at the firm and I are very sorry to hear of your loss and wanted you to know that, even through the smallest of actions, he touched our lives and we will always miss his smiling face.

Oh, how I never looked for this day to happen. I have known Newell and Denise for many years and when my family moved into this ward, we were greated by them as good friends would. Newell had the energy of 4 men and I know enjoyed serving others. He did it in his own quiet way and never expected anything in return. He was an excellent teacher and always had a response to any question in classes. I think one of his most favorite people to quote from was Richard L. Evans. We worked together in the Scouting Program for several years and rolled up our sleeves together on welfare assignments We have enjoyed knowing Newell and will miss him dearly. Our prayers go out to all your family. The Merv Evans Family.
