Roy Lancaster Obituary

1929 ~ 2017
Roy Bryant Lancaster Jr. passed away August 29, 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Roy was born February 18, 1929 in Salt Lake City to Roy Bryant Lancaster and Emily Brown Lancaster. He grew up in Salt Lake City attending Hawthorne Elementary, Lincoln Junior High, South High and the University of Utah. He joined the US Marine Corps in July, 1946. He met and married Mitzie (Ida Arvella) Jaynes June 30, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. In 1950 he was called to active duty in the Korean Conflict.
Roy worked for the Salt Lake City Water Department for 34 years and was Superintendent of the Water Treatment Plant in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Roy was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in bishoprics, High Priest Group Leader, Elders Quorum President and many other callings. He enjoyed genealogy and the temple. He and Mitzie served in the Salt Lake Temple together as ordinance workers for many years. When Roy retired they accepted a mission call to serve in the New Zealand Temple. It was an experience of a lifetime and they will always cherish their service in New Zealand.
Roy loved sports and for many years umpired Little League baseball and softball games. He could see the ball diamonds he umpired on out his window at Garden Terrace Care Center. He also refereed many youth and high school basketball games. He LOVED golf and was thrilled at the time of his retirement when given a LIFETIME golf pass to all Salt Lake City Golf Courses.
Roy is survived by his wife, Mitzie; 4 children, Nancy Boyer (Russ), Marilyn Hulet (Mark), Bryant (Susan), Annette Rudd (Charlie); 16 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren (1 serving an LDS Mission in North Carolina). Roy was preceded in death by his parents, sister (Beverly) and infant son.
We will always be grateful for his example of quiet service, his strong testimony, his support in all we did and his unconditional love. We will never forget his sense of humor, the way his eyes disappeared when he laughed and his strong hugs that we all loved so much!
We want to thank all the doctors, nurses and CNAs at Garden Terrace for their compassion, love and care of Dad for the past 4½ years. They fell in love with his happy, cheerful nature, which came shining through in the songs he hummed daily.
A viewing will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 am on Monday, September 4, 2017 at the Rodeo Lane Chapel, 6350 South Rodeo Lane (about 1500 E). The funeral will follow at noon in the chapel. Interment Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Primary Children's Hospital.

I am sad at the news of Roy passing. He is one of a few leaders I remember fondly from my youth. I would run into him ever so often at different location and would come away happy to know that I got to see him. He is one of those chosen few that really made a difference in the youth at the time of he service. May the comforter be with you at this time.
