Shaun Buttars Obituary

Shaun J. Buttars
1965-2015
Salt Lake City, Utah-Shaun J. Buttars, 49, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2015 as a result of complications from a stroke. Shaun was born on January 29, 1965. He spent his early childhood attending Ensign Elementary, going to dinner at the Pagoda restaurant with his parents, and rolling down the hill at the Clarkston City Cemetery. He attended Skyline High School where he wrestled, played football and began singing and playing drums in a band, which he continued through his early college years. His high school and college buddies have remained lifelong friends.
Shaun obtained Bachelor's and Master's degrees and spent most of his professional life as a public servant for the State of Utah. At one time he managed the State Archives Record Center and was featured in an article in the Deseret News about that facility. Shaun was an expert in all matters of public records management and took great joy in the relationships he built with his colleagues.
But Shaun's greatest pride and joy were his two sons, Michael and Christian (their mother, Jen, and Shaun were married for 15 years). His first reaction to the surprise news of impending fatherhood was, "Oh cool!" Shaun was a natural dad. He had those boys in his arms every minute they would let him. When the boys were younger, he loved having them come to visit him for lunch at work when they had breaks from school. Since his divorce, he has spent every weekend with the boys spending countless hours hanging out, watching football and grilling.
Shaun leaves behind a legacy of caring fatherhood, countless funny stories and inside jokes, and the best ever way to cook beer brats. He is predeceased by his father, Royal Buttars; and survived by his mother, Margaret Buttars; and sons Michael and Christian.
Shaun disliked funerals and would have hated to make people get in their "Sunday clothes" to come to his. Instead we will have a celebration of Shaun's life on Thursday, January 29 (Shaun's 50th birthday) at the Mount Olympus Ward (4635 S Lanarck Rd.) Visitation will begin at 6:30pm, with a brief service beginning at 7pm followed by a reception for his family and friends. Please come as you are. Bring pictures, cards and stories of Shaun to share. At Christian's request, flowers should be white. A brief graveside service will be held at the Clarkston City Cemetery at noon on Saturday, January 31. On line condolences www.larkinmortuary.com.

Not sure what to say?

February 3, 2015

I am very saddened to learn of Shaun's passing. Our friendship is among the best memories I have of anyone I've ever known. He was genuine. I lived on J Street, he and family lived on I Street [8 yrs old]. When his family moved to the Olympus Cove area, we only visited a few more times. My regret is that I thought about Shaun often, but never followed through. Best wishes to friends and family. Too soon.

Michael and Christian - I am sorry I could not be there in person to tell you how sorry I am for your loss and how much I think of you both during this very difficult time. I remember your dad from All Saints Episcopal Church when you were little. Be strong and be there for each other. Jen and Tim - the boys are so lucky to be blessed with a strong team like you two. Prayers to your whole family and love your way.

I remember Shaun as a bright and cheerful young college student with a great sence of humor. He always seemed to enjoy life to the fullest. He has left us much too soon.

Michael and Christian,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. He was an intelligent man who loved you both with all his heart. I am glad I got to know all three of you, even for a brief time. Praying that you will find peace during this difficult time.

I just barely remember Shaun from Ensign elementary. He was two grades behind me. I may not have known him personally, but I remember seeing his name and picture in a few yearbooks. My heart is extended to his family. I love to visit the Utah archives website. Thank you, Shaun, for your knowledge and contributions in this field.

Shaun,

My best friend through some of the most important years of my life. We were inseparable for so many years. Memories of the things we did together have lasted a lifetime; from doubling on both of our first dates to just sitting on my porch in the afternoons telling silly stories.

I will miss you.

Jen, Michael, and Christian,

I am so sorry about the tremendous loss of your father (and the father of your sons). I cannot even imagine your pain, I can only hope that you know that you have many friends who care about you and are here for you as you grieve. I hope that you are able to find peace and comfort.
