Walter Scott Obituary

Walter Stevens Scott  ST. GEORGE UT– Walter "Wallie" Stevens Scott, 79, died in his home at his wife's side on Monday, November 11, 2002.  He enjoyed remarkably good health throughout his entire life and was actively involved in several ongoing projects when he was struck unexpectedly by an apparent stroke.Wallie was born September 17, 1923 to Samuel Walter Scott and Mary Stevens Scott in Ogden, Utah. He was the older of two children. Wallie grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and graduated from Piedmont High School in 1941. He worked in the shipyards as a Marine Electrician and attended one semester at the University of California Berkeley Campus before being drafted into the Air Force in March of 1943. He served as a Radio Operator in the South Pacific, logging 225 combat hours in five theaters. His most notable memory was his mission as the Radio Operator on the lead plane sent to Tokyo to take interpreters and others to prepare for General McArthur's historic signing of the Truce. Wallie was the second American Serviceman to set foot on Japanese soil. After the war, Wallie completed his Mechanical Engineering degree in Berkeley. While serving as President of the Deseret Club on the Berkeley Campus, he met Geneve Brinton. They were married June 21, 1947 in Oakland, California. They immediately traveled to Utah to be sealed in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 25, 1947. After graduation, Wallie and Geneve moved to Pleasant Hill, California where they began raising their family. Wallie served in the bishopric, on the High Council, and as a teacher, but most enjoyed his long-term service in the scouting program as a Scoutmaster and Explorer advisor. He influenced the lives of many young men through countless activities, hikes, campouts, and trips to Philmont Scout Ranch. Wallie worked as a design engineer in the aerospace and defense industries. His favorite and most challenging work was designing systems at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Palo Alto, California. He loved to participate in many activities with his family such as hiking and fishing in Yosemite National Park and boating on the San Francisco Bay and at Lake Powell. He was an avid photographer. He photographed many weddings and has an extensive gallery of photographs from all over the United States and Europe. Wallie was actively involved in genealogy work, recently completing a 50-page life history for his father, and another life history for his grandparents. He was in the process of organizing and scanning thousands of family photographs, and converting home movies to DVD for his family. Wallie is survived by his wife, Geneve of St George, and their five children: Walter (Neva) Scott of West Richland WA; David (Sandi) Scott of Alamo, CA; Mary (James) Wells of Broomfield, CO; Richard (Michele) Scott of Cedar Hills, Ut; Robert (Joni) Scott of Danville, CA. They have 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Walter Scott, his mother, Mary Stevens Scott, and his sister, Rosemary Williams.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 16, 2002 at 2 PM in the LDS chapel at 1625 N Lava Flow Drive in Saint George, Utah. Viewings will be held Friday, November 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary, and Saturday, November 16 from 12 Noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Lava Flow Meetinghouse.
