John Arthur Martindale, 76, passed away in the early morning on Monday, August 29, 2016. John was loved by his family and will be missed.
John was born October 12, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa. At 6 years old, John carried and sold corn out of boxcars in the bottoms of Des Moines. On October 24th, 1958, John married Rebecca Ann Briggs. John and Becky had two sons, John Martindale Jr. born in 1950 and Robert (Bob) Martindale in 1962.
John was a hard worker who washed cars for Les Bookie and was later hired on at Bookie Pack where he worked for 25 years. In 1968, John and his wife Becky bought and built Shady Oaks Golf Course in Ackworth, Iowa. In 1972, Shady Oaks opened as a 9 hole course. John decided "we better get big or get out" and with that, another 9 holes were added and Shady Oaks opened as an 18 hole course in 1996.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rebecca Martindale; son, John Martindale Jr.; son, Robert (Bob) Martindale; four grandchildren, Bobby, J.J., Misty, and Austin; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 1, 2016. Funeral service will be Friday, September 2, 2016 at 2:30 p.m.

Lots of memories of running around shady oaks with bobby when we were kids from sledding in the winter to swimming in the ponds looking for golf balls in the summer, thanks John you were one hell of a guy and you will be missed

I was a late afternoon golfer at Shady Oaks. John would be mowing fairways. Often he would stop and take time to visit with me for fifteen minutes or so. I will miss those visits. He was always telling me to wear my hat.
