Herschal Savage Obituary

Herschal "Plug" Savage Jr., 75, a longtime Parker County resident, passed away Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at a local hospital after undergoing heart surgery.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Tuesday at White's Chapel of Memories. Burial: East Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at White's Funeral Home in Weatherford.

Plug was born June 26, 1929, in Brock, but grew up in the oil patch of West Texas near Odessa and Midland.

He graduated from Kermit High School. In 1949, he returned to Weatherford to attend Weatherford Junior College and later attended North Texas State University.

"Plug" married Dorothy Sharpe in 1953 and homesteaded in the old Wright School district, where he farmed, raised cattle and developed a plumbing business.

He was a Mason, a Lion, an Optimist and a Rotarian.

Over the years, Plug contributed his time and efforts to the Little League program, where he and his wife, Dorothy, tirelessly kept the concession stands in operation. His famous "Plugdine" sandwich is still a favorite at the ballpark.

He served as vice president for many years and president in 1978, when the Weatherford team was state champions.

"Plug" taught vocational skills in the Springtown ISD, where he continued to mentor many young people.

After his retirement in 1995, he opened "Plugs Bar-B Q" on Highway 51, where he and Dorothy entertained a host of friends and developed a loyal clientele.

"Plug" was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Survivors: Wife, Dorothy Savage; son, Richard Savage of Amarillo; daughter, Sue Long and husband, Steven of Dripping Springs; grandchildren, Steven Long IV, Conner, Carter and Kalee Savage; and a host of cousins.

It is May now Daddy, mother, the kids and I drove down to attend Steven's graduation down in Dripping Springs. I wish you could have been with us to witness this event. You'd would have been so proud of Sue and Steve and how they together raised Little. He is a fine young man who is destined for greatness. He has been accepted to Texas A & M and will be attending this Fall.

Robert Charles passed a week ago and I no he is with you and uncle Johnny. Time continues to pass rapidly and in a blind of an eye we shall all be together in Heaven void of saddness, only happiness. We all will be in the presents of our Heavenly Father... ( The Alpha and the Omega the beginning and the end, the Great I am, Lord Jesus Christ our Savior).

I will talk to you again soon Daddy. Peace, Love and Happiness

Your Family,

Richard, Connor, Carter & Kalee

My grandfather was one of the grestest men I knew, He was the only real grandfather I had and he was an inspiration to me and I miss him very much, I will always remember him and his bowl full of peacan's how he would always love to give them away his wisdom was only surpased by his kindness and love. He was truly a great man and will be missed and remembered.

Two months have passed since Jesus called you home. I miss you very much and was not prepared for your departure.

I know you entered into Gods' kingdom, and you are happy now, but I still miss you dearly. I think of all the things we did together as father and son. My dreams go there often. Summer is soon approaching and I will, for the first time be cutting and baling hay without you. In the past, at he end of the day I would always see you coming into the field to see how things were going and to pick me up and take me home. You won't be coming to the field this year. I no that at he end of the day you I will for the first time in my life not drive up in your truck to see how things are going and take me home. The first time in the field will be emotinal for me but I will weather the storm. Easter was difficult without you. I have already begun to think about my first fathers day without you. This will also be an emotional time for me. I am taking care of mother like I told you I would in 1996. I will not faulter on my promise I made to you on that Monday night.

I love you Daddy and wish we were all together. I will see you again but not this day, so until that day.

Your son,

Richard

I loved my grandad very very much. He was a great man. He loved to attend church and listen to Brother Toby preach. My grandad was a very wise man. He liked riding on his John deere tractor. I loved grandad's food and especially his deserts (funnel cake). He was especially proud of me when I made the A honor role. I will always remember and love my grandad.

My grandad was a person who gave from his heart. I watched him while he prepared food for the cafe' and he never took shortcuts. He was a lover of football and sports. He would always keep up with the area teams who were coached by previous players from Weatherford.

I never saw my grandad cry, he was always happy. I miss him. I will always try to bring honor to him.

How do you start. Well I have met the man and have to say he treated me like a son. I have eaten the food and he always gave more than you could eat. I was blessed each time I was around him.

I worked with Richard at Bell Helicopter in Ft Worth and can see where Richard got his heart and courage.

They say the greatest compliment you can leave is a reproduction of your life. I've seen that in the Savage family because of Plugs life.

I never met a finer friend in all my life. He was a very special person to everyone he was around and knew. So easy to talk to, and one of the best cooks I've ever seen. He may be gone, but his thoughts and memories will last forever. Your friend forever...Dwight
