Josephine Stevens Obituary

Josephine "Jo" Stevens, 81, a loving wife, mother and Nana, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at a local hospital.

Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday in Laurel Land Memorial Chapel. Burial: Laurel Land Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Laurel Land Funeral Home.

Jo was born in Coalport, Pa., to Italian immigrants. She grew up in New Brunswick, N.J., and moved to Fort Worth in 1946.

Mrs. Stevens worked for Justin Boots for 36 years prior to her retirement. Jo was an active member of VFW Auxiliary District 21, American Ex-Prisoners of War and the Ladies Auxiliary of Military Order of the Purple Heart. Mrs. Stevens was a caring, loving lady who constantly gave her time, energy and talents.

Jo was preceded in death by her first husband, Tommy Strickland, in 1990 and two sisters.

Survivors: Husband, Melton Stevens of Fort Worth; son, William Stevens of Fort Worth; daughter, Kathrine Turney and husband, Joe, of Angleton; granddaughters, Vanissa Mills and husband, Shawn, of Beaumont, Stacy Fleming and husband, Kevin, of Baytown and Megan Turney of Angleton; great-granddaughter, Riley Fleming; sister, Rose Kunsevich of New Jersey; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Mr. Mel, Please accept my deeply saddness on the passing of Ms. Jo, I have known the both of you all of my married life. and Ms. Jo was always very good to me and my children. we loved going to put the flags out on memorial day with her. she always loved my son and my daughters this year you both took my daughters in to help them. please know that I will never forget that. thank you for your love and friendship. Ms. Jo will live in the heart of myself and my son Jesse forever.

Dear Mel,
I will Jo so very much. She took me under her wing when i first became President of 8911 and helped me along the way. She was a kind and sweet person that i will remember all my life. Jo Stevens represented everything patriotic. She was active in many veterans groups and she was a willing teacher to new members of VFW and and a great friend. Her loving nature and her smile will be missed by so many people. To know Jo, was to love her and we did!

Jeanne & I will miss Jo greatly. Jeanne considered Jo to be her second Mom. I was always impressed with her great attitude and vigor. She loved Mel & travel, family & VFW. We are proud to have called Jo & Mel our friends. She welcomed almost everybody into her heart with open arms. She will be greatly missed and remembered often.
