Mary Lorimer Obituary

Lorimer, Mary
1927 - 2019
Mary Alice Battrell Lorimer, 91, of Jackson, Wyoming, formerly of McArthur, passed away Friday, April 19, 2019 at St. John's Living Center in Jackson, Wyoming. She was born July 23, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio, daughter of the late Curt and Flora Goff Battrell. Mary was the widow of the late Robert H. Lorimer Jr. She married her husband, Bob, in 1948. For 60 years they had a relationship full of love and respect. Bob was a school teacher in Ohio and in 1960 he took a summer job in Grand Teton National Park as a Seasonal Ranger Naturalist. Every summer through 1978 the whole family packed up and went to Wyoming to enjoy the splendors of the Grand Teton Mountains. Mary loved the beauty of those mountains, the friends that she met there, the wildlife and all of the big adventures along the way. Mary had an amazing mind. She was curious about everything. With three children under the age of ten, she went to undergraduate and graduate school at The Ohio State University. She got straight A's and earned a full scholarship - graduating with a master's degree in social work. She worked at Buckeye Youth Center in Columbus for 20 years, helping Ohio's young people to turn their lives around. She devoured books, enjoyed word puzzles, did a lot of crocheting and was interested in genealogy. Her favorite pastimes were with her husband Bob, exploring the back roads of the Buckeye State and watching the boats go by on the Ohio River. Mary was strong with humility and empathy. She had a good sense of humor, a wonderful laugh and the most beautiful smile. She will always be missed. She is survived by her sons, John Robert Lorimer of Bremerton, Washington and Thomas Curtis Lorimer of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Mary Catherine (Nick) Centrella of Jackson, Wyoming; grandchildren, Cara, Lisa and Mary; great grandchildren, Atlas, Gabriel and Addelyn and a sister, Jane Cashion of Aubrey, Texas. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2019 in the Garrett-Cardaras Funeral Home, 201 W. High St., McArthur, with Rev. Jerry Griffith Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Elk Cemetery, McArthur. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Please sign her online guestbook at www.cardaras.com

To my second cousins, Cathy, John, and Tom and your families: I was looking for an obituary on Legacy.com and I chanced upon your mother's obituary. Because I am a believer, I am calling this "divine providence". I have always called your mother, Mary Alice, because that is what my father, Solomon Goff, called her. I belief that she preferred being addressed as "Mary." Mary and I were both very active in searching for our Goff genealogy, so I visited her and Bob many times in Mcarthur. We would visit the Prattsville Cemetery, the Mcarthur Library, and other venues that your mother knew about. After Bob's death and had made the decision to move to Jackson, Wyoming, she sent me the Goff Family Bible that was greatly appreciated. Your mother was a special lady who had so many wonderful and endearing personality traits; she was so caring to those who needed her beautiful smile, soft voice, and she was always eager to share stories about the hundreds of books that she avidly read! You were so fortunate to have Bob and Mary as your parents! Post Script: Recently, Goff family has lost Dick Wilson and Joe Wilson.

I went to graduate school with Mary and ten plus years later we worked together at Buckeye Youth Center.
I remember her as a caring sensitive person who wanted the best for the youth we serviced. Yes, her wonderful smile is remembered. Glad to know she lived in the mist of nature's beauty as she often talked about Wyoming and her family. Much love to all of you.

I recall your Mom from my first year teaching in 1962 at West Mound School. Your parents were great people. When my first set of parent-teacher conferences occurred, your Mom came with pad and pencil and made notes on every thing I said. At the time I was truly nervous. That year she became a very supportive parent. Because they shared about their summers in the Tetons, we took our two boys several years later...even stopping in at a visitor's center and saying hello to your Dad. You all have some great memories I'm sure.

Cathy, John and Tom. Your Mom is a kind and intelligent person who was always fun to talk to. My life was made richer by knowing her, getting to know her better in recent years, and by knowing your whole family! I'm thinking of you at this tough time. Sending Love.
