RAYMOND VELASQUEZ Obituary

RAYMOND VELASQUEZ Raymond (Ray) Velasquez, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, passed away on August 17, 2023, in Ulysses, KS surrounded by his family. He was born on November 23, 1946, in Tucumcari, NM to his loving parents Alfonso and Mary Velasquez. On April 29, 1976, Ray married the love of his life, Irene Delgado, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. As devoted parents, Ray and Irene were blessed with six children: Dianne (Lawrence) Tapia, Connie (Mychael) Parker, Marina (Eric) Spexarth, Juan (Geneve) Duran, Evelina Velasquez, and Noah Velasquez. Ray was a dedicated family man, always putting the needs of his loved ones above his own. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment he spent with them. Ray's legacy will live on through his 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Ray received his education at Liberal High School, and during his tenure competed in the 1963 National Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament in Chicago, IL. After high school Ray began working in the oil fields inspiring him to start his own business in 1981, Borderline Well Service, where he worked tirelessly and made a significant impact in his community. Throughout the company's time hundreds of individuals were employed and Ray never felt they were just employees but family going through the good, the bad and the ugly over the 40+ years of operation. Throughout his life, Ray was known for his unwavering faith, strength and resilience. Even in the face of adversity, he approached every challenge with grace and courage. His unwavering optimism and infectious personality touched the lives of all who knew him. Ray left a significant impact on various organizations and his community. Ray was not only a loving family member and friend but also a passionate and dedicated participant in several hobbies and organizations that brought joy and enrichment to his life and those around him. He was a proud member of the American GI Forum, and demonstrated unwavering support for veterans and their families. His commitment to camaraderie and advocacy within this group made a positive difference in the lives of many. The Knights of Columbus also held a special place in Ray's heart. As a member, he exemplified the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. His contributions to the organization's philanthropic efforts and community projects displayed a genuine dedication to making the world a better place. Ray was an active and devoted parishioner of Mary Queen of Peace parish. Through his faith, they found solace, strength, and a sense of belonging within the church community. His participation in various church activities and events showcased his deep spiritual connection and commitment to serving others. On August 17, 2023, Ray's battle with cancer came to an end. While his departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, his memory will forever bring comfort and joy. Ray will be remembered as a pillar of strength and a beacon of hope. Raymond Velasquez leaves behind a loving family whose lives were forever enriched by his presence. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide them through life's journey. Although our hearts may ache, we find solace in knowing that Ray has found eternal peace. Additionally to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Ray is survived by his eight sisters and brothers; Dorothy Millen, Irene Kemper, Maxine Montoya, Shirley Montano, Bobby, Tommy, Abel and Joseph Velasquez. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Viola Kautz. Rosary will be Monday, August 21, 2023, at 7:00 PM at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Liberal with Reverend Charles Seiwert officiating. Interment will follow at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal. Visitation is Monday, August 21, 2023, from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American GI Forum, Knights of Columbus, or Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church all in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880. Condolences may be posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com.
