Rebekah Troutman Obituary

Rebekah Vaughn Troutman peacefully passed away the night of July 15, 2009.
She was born in Selma on Nov. 7, 1944, the daughter of John Henry Vaughn and Nell Tucker Vaughn.
She began her college freshman year at Howard (later Samford) University, where she met William Wayne Troutman, whom she later wed. After graduating from Samford, the couple enjoyed their newlywed years in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Malisa Vaughn was born to the couple in 1970, followed by John William in 1973. The next year, the family relocated to Dothan. Rebekah taught kindergarten and preschool at Evergreen Presbyterian Church from 1976 through 1979 and taught at East Highland Elementary the next year.
In 1980, she began serving as director/teacher for Dothan City School's Head Start Program. While working with Dothan's Head Start children and helping to establish the Alfred Saliba Family Services Center, she earned a doctorate in education in 2003 and retired in 2008 as the director of Early Childhood Education Services for DCS.
Rebekah served as a board member for several organizations and community services over the years, including the Houston County Children's Policy Council, the Alfred Saliba Family Services Center, the Council for Exceptional Children, the Governor's Task Force for Strengthening Alabama's Children, the Voices for Alabama's Children, the Dothan/Houston County Association of Retarded Citizens, the Alabama Head Start Association, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. U.S. Congressman Carl Elliot honored her for her service to Alabama's children. In addition to her professional work, she and her family enjoyed an active membership in Dothan's First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and served on the finance committee for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and in 1988 by her husband.
She is survived by her children, Malisa Troutman, Ph.D., of New York, N.Y., and John Troutman, Ph.D., of Lafayette, La.; her brother, John Robert Vaughn of Tucson, Ariz.; and her grandson, John Florian Troutman.
The family would like to recognize her friends and loved ones in Dothan and the remarkable staff, administrators and educators within the Dothan City Schools system.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rebekah Troutman's name to the Alfred Saliba Family Services Center, 545 W. Main St., Suite 100, Dothan, AL 36301.

Dr. Troutman,
Thanks for all the wonderful experiences I had while working with you in meeting the needs of special preschool children. You were a gift to these children, their parents, and to me. I'll miss your laugh, your sense of humor, your 101 questions when trying to make sure all our services were in order (HAHA), your astute ability to solve problems, your words of encouragement and advice ONLY if I asked. While here with us, you wanted no recognition or praise for the contributions you made to better the lives of others. Your reward came later...the precious words, "Well done my good and faithful servant". Love You!

I am so sad as I read this. Your Mom was a very special person. I met her at Head Start when my son was diagnosed with Autism. She walked me through some hard times and she genuinely cared about him. After he left there she would drop my work and ask about him. She will be greatly missed.

John and Lisa, I am so sorry about the death of you mother. Rebekah had the most calm and sweet demeanor working with children. I will always remember her as such a loving teacher when she helped me in Missions Friends at First Baptist. I also have good memories of you two through the 6th grade S.S. class. May you be comforted by God's love for you.

Thank you for sharing your mother with us. Dr. Troutman was a remarkable woman. She had a true, honest, & loving compassion for all children. This gift was given to her from God. She will be missed. Her legacy will live on. She encouraged my personal children (La'Keisha, Johnny, & Jasper)to be a positive influence to the community. To Rebekah's family: What a wonderful lady to have known all these years. Rebekah has been my friend since 1981 and I have grown so much by knowing her. In her quiet way she touched many people in such a positive way. I miss her, but was so happy and fortunate to have known her.

John & Lisa,
I will praying for strength and peace as you deal with the loss of your mother. She was my mentor and friend. We are all better because she was part of our life. Our Head Start staff will miss her but we will work hard to keep her mission for children and families at the fore-front. May God watch over you and give you peace.

TO: John and Lisa, I loved your mother. We worked together for 29 years and I never met a more caring loving, giving person. She loved Head Start and the children. She will never be forgotten. I would love to see a scholarship in her name to a deserving Head Start or Early Head Start graduate who was able to ovecome hardships and obstacles to graduate High School. I don't know if she told you this but everytime someone she knew passed away she donated a book to the Head Start library in their name. We want to see Jack. She was going to bring him for us to see. Please bring him so we can see him. He brought so much joy to her for the short time she had with him. I know how much she loved both of you. She talked about you all the time and she was so proud of your accomplishments. John, she talked about what a fine man you had turned out to be and what a great father you was. Your whole family is in my prayers. Love always,

She was a great and wonderful woman. God will be blessed to have her as one of his angels. Thousands of families have been touched by her, through her work and compassion, and they never even knew her name, but the actions were louder than words. She will be sorely missed. She had a special kind of love that you don't see but in a very few people. She always put herself last but in our hearts she was always, and always will be first. May God comfort you and you are in our prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Rebekah was one of the most sincere, dedicated, generous, and gentle spirits I have ever known. She has left behind a wonderful legacy of love with her family, the many children she worked with and taught over the years, and with all of those who knew her, loved her, and respected her. I thank God that He gave me the privilege of knowing her. May He bless your family and ease your sorrow during this difficult time.
