Douglas Martin Obituary

WATERVILLE -- Douglas J. Martin passed away March 26, 2007, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born Sept. 2, 1933, the son of Delvina and Joseph T. Martin. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1951 and attended the University of Maine. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Dashiell.

On his return from the Navy, he married Frances J. Lyons in 1954. He worked for many years as a loan officer for the Federal Trust Company of Waterville. Doug always enjoyed cooking; he also enjoyed entertaining family and friends with his wife, Franny. He and Fran loved to take off to Greenville with their friends to enjoy ice fishing, cross country skiing and cards. Doug loved his home and took great pride in the roses and various flowers he and Fran grew. Their yard became a sanctuary for small birds, deer and many wild turkeys.

Doug loved his sports cars. His MGB, Corvette and Mercedes-Benz were his favorites.

In addition to his lovely and devoted wife of 52 years, Frances, of Waterville, he is survived by several nieces, nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.

Doug had many friends and colleagues from his banking days who have been wonderful support during his battle with cancer, Clarence "Chuck" Bickford, Don and Lil Tully and Jane Leighton. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Frances; his niece and her husband, Ruth and Mark Fitzpatrick of Winterport and their daughters (godchild) Olivia Mayer of California and Annie Fitzpatrick of Massachusetts; and his nephew, Peter Drapeau.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Blanche Drapeau; and his niece, Linda Drapeau.

Doug and Fran had many pets as companions over the years: Jumper and Buffy, Heidi, Sonny, Suzie and Mickey. In lieu of flowers and because of their love of animals, donations may be made in Doug's name to the Humane Society Waterville Area, 100 Webb Road, Waterville, ME 04901.

Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park St., Waterville. A service of remembrance will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 30, at the funeral home.
