Edith MacDiarmid Obituary

Edith Allen MacDiarmid, died on Aug. 7, 2001, at her home in San Carlos, after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. She was 92. Born in Pawtucket Rhode Island, Edie graduated from Connecticut College in 1930 with a degree in Fine Arts. She married a Coast Guard Academy graduate and lived the life of a service wife, moving her family to such diverse places as Seward, Alaska, Honolulu, Port Angeles, Wa; Elizabeth City, NC; New York and San Diego. Edie claimed that being from the smallest state made her want to see the world, so after she and her husband Mac retired to San Diego in 1959 she began her world travels. She inspired many friends with her stories and slide shows of trips to every continent, continuing her exotic trip destinations throughout her eighties. She was an active volunteer, logging in thousands of hours at Sharp Hospital in San Diego, as well as Walkabouts International, and photography clubs. Edie moved north to San Carlos to be closer to her family in 1997. Although her life style slowed down, she continued to travel with her family, volunteered at San Carlos Senior Center and was an avid fan at her grandchildren's school events. She is survived by daughter Liz Taylor Tiernan, son-in-law Mike, and grandson Sean of San Carlos; son Hugh and wife Barbara of San Jose; son Al of Benson, Arizona; also granddaughters Malia MacDiarmid and her husband Rod Knutson of San Francisco, Dawn MacDiarmid of Fremont, Laurie MacDiarmid and her husband Dave Peterson of Greenbay WI; grandsons Scott MacDiarmid of San Jose, Douglas MacDiamid of Hayfork, Ca; and three great grandchildren: Timothy Knutson of San Francisco, Miles MacDiarmid of San Francisco, and Elizabeth MacDiarmid Peterson of Greenbay. Her vitality, positive outlook and unfailing good humor were an inspiration to us all. She will be missed but never forgotten. A private celebration of Edie's life was held by family members on August 18. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, The MidPeninsula Pathways Hospice Foundation, or Pets in Need.
