John O'Malley passed away on June 3, 2016 at the age of 82. He was a native of Derryrush, County Galway, Ireland born on August 2, 1933 to Patrick and Margaret O'Malley.
John was a native Gaelic speaker who immigrated to England at the age of 18. After several years in London, he left for Canada and eventually to the United States. He made his way from Boston to Chicago and then finally to California.
Not long after arriving in California, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years. After the Army, he applied for jobs with the telephone company, the water company and Pacific Gas & Electric. He was proud to have had job offers from all three, but he chose PG&E, where he worked for 35 years.
John loved to barbecue, tell great stories, play Irish music on his accordion and, most importantly, spend time with family. He was a long-time parishioner at St. Felicitas Catholic Church.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of nearly 55 years, Teresa; sister Margaret; sons Sean, Eamon and Patrick; daughters-in-law Maria and Jody; grandchildren Caitlin, Brendan, Sarah, Eamon, Grace and William, in addition to numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in the U.S., Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Anthony, Thomas, Colman, Michael and Mary.
There will be a rosary at 6:00 p.m. on June 14 at Santos Robinson Mortuary at 160 Estudillo Ave, San Leandro, in addition to visitation hours from 12:00pm to 6:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 15 at St. Felicitas Church, 1650 Manor Blvd, San Leandro, CA 94579. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.
