Joseph A. McCarthy Sr.

Joseph A. McCarthy, Sr 1917 - 2009 Resident of Castro Valley Joseph A. McCarthy, Sr., born October 30, 1917, in Oakland, CA., died Sept. 1, 2009. He was 91 years old , a resident of Livermore from 1967 to 2005, and then a resident of Castro Valley until his passing. He was the devoted husband of the late Angela McCarthy for 37 years and before that to the late Marian Hyllis Mahood for 20 years. Mr. McCarthy was graduated form St. Mary's College high school, Berkeley, in 1935 and St. Mary's College, Moraga, in 1939. He retired from Lawrence Livermore Laboratory after nearly 20 years in the Procurement Department. He was a member of St Michael's church where he served many years as a lector, eucharistic minister, a member of the Golden Friends, and a past member of the parish council and school board. He was also a past director of Interfaith Housing, Inc., and past director of the Weiner Memorial Senior Fund in Livermore. He was a member of Transfiguration church in Castro Valley since 2005. Mr. McCarthy is survived by his beloved son and daughters-in-law, Joseph Jr. and Donna McCarthy of American Canyon, and Karen McCarthy of Castro Valley and by four adored grandchildren and five great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his loving son, Kevin McCarthy in 2008. Services will be held Monday Sept. 14, at 11am at St. Michael's Church with inurnment at a later date. Arrangements are made by Callaghan's Mortuary of Livermore. Any memorials may be sent to charities of choice.
