Mavis Peeples
July 2, 1925 - April 2, 2021
San Jose, California
Mavis Elizabeth Peeples, born in Detroit, Michigan, on July 2, 1925, age 95, died peacefully at home on April 2, 2021, in San Jose, California after a long and blessed life full of love, family and faith. The daughter of Eric and Nellie Broadbent (nee Bateson) (deceased), Mavis worked for the telephone company in Michigan and transferred to the California branch when her family moved to Southern California in the late 1940's. In California, Mavis met and married the love of her life, John, in 1950. They shared a wonderful, long life together celebrating their 69th anniversary in 2019. Mavis was a beautiful, kind, outgoing, artistic and intelligent woman who fully invested herself into her family as Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma! Mavis was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church. She and John met at the San Bernardino Presbyterian Church in a young adult group called The Caviteers. Many couples from the group were married during the early 1950's and stayed in touch over the next fifty years, enjoying life-long friendships. After Mavis and John moved to Northern California in the early 1970's, they joined St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Hill where they were active members for over 30 years. Mavis was the primary caregiver for her mother, Nellie, after the death of her Father in his 70's. Her Mother lived to be 100! She was a dedicated, loyal and loving daughter throughout those many years caring for her Mother. Mavis had a love of people and a true sense of giving back that was always present in her day to day life. If someone bestowed her a kindness, you could guarantee a return kindness would follow. Very social, she loved to talk and spend time with her family, extended family and many friends. She was a wonderful cook and hostess and her family recipes for scotch shortbread among others were simply divine! She taught her children so much about life, love, faith, giving back, inner strength, their capabilities and treating everyone with kindness and care. She was a loving and nurturing Mom, a best friend to all of her children throughout their adult lives. Mavis volunteered many hours over her life helping children and young adults be it thru Girl Scouts, school activities, school reading programs or Church youth groups. She was a gifted artist who began painting and drawing as an adult. Her portfolio consists of over 30 framed paintings. Even this past year during pandemic times, she rediscovered her inner artist by coloring! She played the piano and was an avid reader. Even as a young girl, Mavis had a love of books. She would consistently read three to four books at a time! After her children were grown, she made the decision to go back to college where she earned her Associate of Arts Degree from Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. No matter what she put her mind too, you can bet on Mavis accomplishing it! In her retirement years, Mavis traveled with John and spent a lot of time with her grandchildren thinking up fun day trips and activities to do. She always spoke with great affection about her parents, her family life, growing up in Michigan, her younger brother, Art and her British heritage. Her Mom and Dad emigrated from England in 1921 via ocean liner. Her Dad worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan on the graveyard shift for many years. Mavis is predeceased by her husband, John Moffett Peeples; her son, David Alan Peeples (Kris) and her brother, Arthur Broadbent. She is survived by her three children, son, James G. Peeples (Wendy), son, Donald E. Peeples; daughter, Pamela S. Salsgiver (Mark Coolidge), her six grandchildren, Patrick McLaughlin, Katie Greenfield (Josh), Eric Peeples (Laura), Rebekah Peeples, Marcus Peeples and Joshua Salsgiver, her five great-grandchildren, and her three nieces and two nephews. Mavis will be deeply missed. Her life will be celebrated this spring in a private family outdoor ceremony/picnic. Mavis will be laid to rest and reunited with her husband, John, at Sacramento Valley Veterans Cemetery, Dixon, California on May 18, 2021.
