Sandra Glenn Cundiff Clark
December 9, 1939 - February 12, 2022
Resident of Walnut Creek, CA
Our dearest Sandy, wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, and mentor left us on February 12, 2022, as her spirit soared from her fragile body, bound for the heavens.
Sandy was a beautiful, talented, loving lady and a role model wife, mother, and grandmother. Her heart was filled with kindness and compassion for others, and she knew her calling as a caregiver and nurse at an early age. She devoted her life's work to bringing comfort and joy to all those around her. An excellent cook, Sandy loved to make amazing dishes to the delight of her family and friends. Every corner of her home and garden reflected her passion to bring beauty and grace to her surroundings and to create a happy gathering place to celebrate life.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, on December 9, 1939, to parents Charles L. and Devonia L. Cundiff, Sandy lived in Detroit until she moved to Ohio when she was 16. At London High School, she met Charles Clark, the love of her life and future husband.
After high school graduation, she pursued her dream to become a nurse. She was accepted to Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in New York, New York and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1961. Sandy moved to Los Angeles after graduation and was employed by the Los Angeles County General Hospital, working as an Emergency Room RN.
On August 1, 1964, Sandy married Chuck, who was a Marine Lieutenant, in the General's Chapel in a full military wedding ceremony at Camp Pendleton, CA.
While Chuck was still on active Marine Corps duty and they were living in San Clemente, CA, Sandy was employed by the Bechtel Corporation as the jobsite nurse at the construction site for the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant. As an emergency practice exercise during the construction, Sandy was lowered by crane and basket inside the giant reactor dome to simulate a response to a serious workman injury inside the structure. She loved the excitement and the challenge.
Sandy's nursing career after her marriage included Oncology Staff Nursing at Merritt Hospital, now known as Summit Medical Center in Oakland, CA. While at Merritt Hospital, she led a patient/family cancer education course for terminal patients, which was sponsored, by the hospital and the American Cancer Society.
After transitioning from staff nursing, Sandy was a Utilization Review Coordinator for Merritt. She followed that by joining the staff of Blue Cross of California in Oakland as Regional Contract Manager and a later as a Provider Services Consultant. During that period, Sandy furthered her nursing education by earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, magna cum laude, from California State University in 1975.
Sandy was an enthusiastic member of the Diablo Women's Garden Club in Alamo for many years before her illness, and loved all flowers, especially roses, and could nurse about any ailing plant back to life if need be.
She was an active member of the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church in Alamo for 45 years and served during that time as a Stephen Minister and a member of her beloved women's Pearls group. She also volunteered and for several years led a monthly class for women with Parkinson's Disease for the Parkinson's Network of Mt. Diablo.
A private graveside service was conducted for Sandy, and a memorial service at her church will be held on April 23, 2022. She leaves behind her husband of 57 years, Chuck Clark of Walnut Creek, CA; and her two children--son G. Tyler Clark and his wife Maria and their daughter Zahra of Santa Barbara, CA; and her daughter Myla G. Clark and Myla's children, Hannah and Maxwell Niederauer of Phoenix, AZ.
She loved her family with all of her heart and soul and cherished her dear friends. Her loving care and contributions touched many lives during her lifetime, and she will live forever in our hearts.
Rest in peace dear Sandy. Until we meet again. You are forever with us. We love you.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sandy's memory can be made to the Parkinson's Network of Mt. Diablo, PO Box 3127, Walnut Creek, CA. 94598.
