Helen Greig Obituary

Helen Marjorie Larkin Greig passed away peacefully, on Thursday, October 8, 2015, at the age of 93. After a long life, enriched with good health, family and friends, she is now at peace in God's presence. Born February 21, 1922, in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Major Joseph S. and Helen (Ward) Larkin.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. Greig, a grandson, Nicholas P. Caccavo, as well as three brothers, Joseph, Frank, and Theodore Larkin. Her next door neighbor and dear friend, Anna Mae Neumaier, passed away in 2006.

Helen is survived by her five children: Mary Elizabeth (Michael) Fleming, Richard S. Greig, Barbara (Sumner) Nichols, Helen Sandee Caccavo, and Marjorie (James) Carey. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Michael, Theodore, and Ryan Fleming, Daniel Wagner, Alexandria and Sumner Nichols III, Katherine Caccavo, and Jessica and Benjamin Carey. She is further survived by nine great-grandchildren.

Helen, best known to friends and family as Dolly, graduated from St. Scholastica High School in Evanston, Ill. During World War II, she supported the war effort by serving as a nurse's aide and mending military uniforms. Dolly moved to Erie with her husband, Richard A. Greig of Sewickley, who worked for Dravo-Doyle Co. before starting his own business, R. A. Greig Equipment Co., in 1968. Dolly soon began working in the growing family business as secretary-treasurer. After twenty years of devoted service, she retired as Chief Financial Officer in 1990. Dolly spent her later life traveling, reading, quilting, researching her ancestry, and providing loving and logistical support to her children and grandchildren. She has been a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church since services were held in the chapel at St. Joseph's Orphanage, and was also an active member in Zonta's Women's Club. Her Irish heritage was evident in her quick wit and great sense of humor.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Helen's longtime care giver, Jeanne Frey, the staff at Westlake Woods Assisted Living, and Heartland Hospice.

Friends may call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, 728 West 9th St., on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 2801 West 6th St., on Monday at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Church.

Not sure what to say?

October 19, 2015

I received word of my Aunt Dolly's recent passing; she is now reunited with her always loved husband, parents, and brothers. I'm quite sure Sylvester is also around somewhere there too.

I cherish my memories of her and do think of her with much love and fondness. Time passes and waits for no man, do not put off saying those I love you's and giving those hugs.

Mary Beth:

It was right around this time of year when I had a very pleasant visit with your mother about 7-8 years ago when she was out in the yard raking leaves at the house on Virginia. A sophisticated and quick-witted lady - and of course she made it a point to brag you up a bit.
Condolences to you and all of your family.
