Donald Sipes Obituary
Donald Norman Sipes, 69, formerly of Westminster, Md., passed on Friday, September 10, 2004 at Gettysburg Hospital, after battling cancer for 16 years. He was the husband of Joan Masemore Sipes for 47 years. Born August 31, 1935, in Baltimore, Md., and raised in Carroll County, he was the younger son of the late Roy Norman Sipes and Alice (Hoffman) Sipes Doerr. Mr. Sipes served with the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict. Last stationed in Quantico, Va., and awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the UN Service Medal and The Koren Service Medal. He was a professional truck driver who retired after 50 years and continued to teach his profession at Hood College. Mr. Sipes was an avid Redskins fan and motorcyclist, being a charter member and past president of the Maryland Gold Wings, Inc.; and member of the Maryland Retreads. He was a member of the Bethal Assembly of God, Littlestown; and American Legion Post 31 of Westminster, Md., for 33 years. He attained as a Mason the 32nd degree by Scottish Rite and was a member of Door to Virtue Chapter No. 46 A.F.& A.M. of Westminster, Md. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Roy N. and wife, Colleen Sipes of Taneytown, Md., and Michael and wife, JoAnn Sipes of Big Pine Key, Fla.; a daughter, Deborah Hawse of Littlestown; three grandsons; and two granddaughters; one great-grandson; and one great-granddaughter; brother William R. and wife, Addie L. Sipes of New Windsor, Md.; sister-in-law, Lavenne Reaver of Taneytown, Md.; numerous nieces and nephews; and an extended family of friends. His wish was that his body be donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board. A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 26, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church on Carroll Street in Westminster, Md. The Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 66 East Hanover St., Bonneauville, is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Red Cross.
