Gary Steele Obituary

Steele, Dr. Gary F.

Gary F. Steele, M.D., 66, of Waupun, passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, June 22, 2016.

Gary, the son of Garland and Pansy (Cooper) Steele, was born on August 9, 1949, in Keyser, WV. On May 27, 1973, he was united in marriage to Catherine Cornell at Wesley United Methodist Church in Morgantown, West Virginia.

After graduating from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1974, he served as a medical officer in the United States Navy from 1975 to 1981, onboard the USS White Plains and USS Wainwright. Upon separation from the Navy, he and Cathy opened a medical practice in Madison, WV. They transferred the practice briefly to South Carolina, before making a permanent home in rural Wisconsin.

In Brownsville, he nurtured the small medical clinic into a thriving family medicine practice, based on care, concern and partnership with his patients and families. He cared for generations, encompassing their entire life cycle, becoming a true touchstone of the greater community.

Gary enjoyed hunting behind his spaniels and labs for upland game and waterfowl. He enjoyed traveling with Cathy to find new sights, a passion they found while stationed in Japan. In retirement, they had travelled hither and yon, from Alaska to Nova Scotia to Italy. He found tranquility in tatting ornaments and jewelry, as well as woodturning.

Those Gary leaves behind to cherish his memory include his wife, Cathy; two sons, Jacob Steele (partner, Allison Martin) of Washington D.C. and Isaac Steele of Brooklyn, NY; his parents, Garland and Pansy Steele of Tornado, WV; two brothers, Terry (Carol) Steele and Paul (Diana) Steele; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial visitation for Gary will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at the Brownsville Community Club, 871 West Main Street in Brownsville from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Private family services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Hope of Wisconsin (www.hopeofwisconsin.org) are appreciated by the family.

Dear Cathy and Family,
I met Gary when he was shopping for Medicare plans. Although I did not know him very long, he made a lasting impression on me as a kind, caring and genuine man. I could feel his dedication to his patients and his profession. His legacy lives on in all of us that he touched. His work continues...only from a different vantage point.
I am truly blessed to have met him.

Dr. Steele saved my 12 year old son's life when I took my son in to have a huge swollen knee checked out. Dr. Steele had JUST had a patient before my son with same symptoms, that he was able to diagnose with Lymes disease. Dr. Steele took at least 3 long tubes of fluid out of my son's knee and also found him to have Lymes to. After a month's worth of medication my son was fine, if it weren't for Dr. Steele's quick thinking my son could have been paralyezed or dead. THANK YOU Doc for taking care of my family and I for many year's. You will be missed God Bless to all Family and friends. Liz Taylor of Fond du Lac aka Annliz Taylor.

I am just heart broken as so many of us are! Dr Steele showed nothing but out going care and concern for my well being. He listened to me and he understood my concerns. We exchanged books, he spoke of his two sons and his wife with love. I will NEVER forget how he always made me feel when I left the office regardless of how badly I was feeling. He was so kind and would not allow me to leave until he knew I understood what I was there for! He put a smile on my face and gave me hope. When he spoke of retiring I would just about come apart. As time went on I realized it was my selfishness that wanted him to never retire! He was tired too ! One day I hope to see him again .Rest now my friend, it is your turn... y55

Dear Cathy, Jake, and Issac,

I am deeply saddened. I worked along side of Dr. Steele for more than 15 years. Together we cared for patients in multiple Nursing Facilities. Dr. Steele always saw the vital person now confined, debilitated, and dependent. In his passionate care of seniors, Dr. Steele understood that patients grieved their loss of independence, function, and productivity. Chronic disease has a tendency to slowly chip away at patients' abilities until the essence of that person is reduced and sometimes lost.

I considered Dr. Steele and his wife Cathy to be friends of my spouse (Musky Mike) and myself. I am so sorry that my own circumstances disabled me to the extent that I could not reach out to you for the last 3 years.

Dr. Steele was a true physician who put his patients first. Where ever we went; patients and staff light up when he was in the building. I have more respect and love for this fine man than all other medical professionals put together. I will treasure the happy times, the conversations, and the times we were fortunate enough to get together as couples. "Frog Holler" will always hold Gary's essence. Cathy, Issac, and Jake; Gary frequently spoke happily and heartily about all of you. He will be remembered by so many.

I did not know that Gary was ill. I am sad because I would have tried harder to reach out. Cling to each other now. You are in our thoughts and prayers. ~ Jewels
